TikTok's issues in the US intensify, FTC expected to take legal action for poor management of children's data privacy and security
The situation for TikTok in the US could deteriorate as a lengthy inquiry into their data management practices nears conclusion. The US FTC might sue or levy hefty penalties on TikTok and ByteDance for their poor handling of children's data privacy and security.
TikTok and ByteDance appear to be continuously facing challenges in the US. Amidst a constant struggle against a suggested law that might result in its prohibition in the United States, TikTok is now staring at the impending danger of facing measures from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Politico has reported that the FTC is close to finalizing a long-term investigation into a well-liked social media platform, which could result in a significant lawsuit or hefty penalties.
The main focus of the inquiry allegedly centers on TikTok's privacy and security measures, especially how it manages children's user data.
Politico states that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is thoroughly examining possible violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). It is also looking into claims that the company dishonestly portrayed its policies by incorrectly stating that people in China could not access data from US users.
Moreover, TikTok might be penalized for breaching the conditions set in its 2019 agreement with regulatory bodies concerning data protection.
The results of the FTC's probe into TikTok are still unclear, but the growing regulatory scrutiny is creating substantial obstacles for TikTok as it works to preserve its dominant position in its biggest market. Importantly, the Senate is considering a bill, already approved quickly in the House, that would force TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to either sell off the app or face a complete ban in the US.
The Biden Administration has endorsed this action, mirroring attempts to pressure ByteDance into giving up control over TikTok. Additionally, US intelligence authorities have informed legislators about alleged national security risks tied to the app, further complicating TikTok's situation.
