The US military is testing GenAI for battlefield tactics through video games, a study shows

The American military is currently investigating the use of generative AI systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT for vital military tasks. The US Army is employing virtual military video games to experiment with strategies and war planning using AI.

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory is exploring the potential of OpenAI's generative AI technologies for strategizing in warfare, utilizing a virtual military video game setting for this purpose.

According to an article from the New Scientist, researchers from the US Army are using OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4 Vision models to gather information on virtual battlefield landscapes, recognize allies and adversaries, and provide strategic military advice on attacking and defending tactics. In addition to these, they are also employing two additional AI models that are built on previous technology.

In the conducted trials, AI helpers were tasked with wiping out all opposing units and securing a designated target area. After being assigned the task, the AI helpers created several action plans, which were later honed by a user in the role of a commander. Even though OpenAI's GPT models outperformed the rest, they also led to a higher number of losses while achieving mission goals.

The inclusion of generative AI in military tactics is only a minor element of the US Army's broader initiative to utilize artificial intelligence.

The US Department of Defense's major AI endeavor, Project Maven, has proven effective in tasks such as pinpointing rocket launchers in Yemen and surface ships in the Red Sea. It has also been instrumental in identifying targets for attacks in Iraq and Syria, as per a Bloomberg report.

The possible use of AI in combat situations brings significant moral issues to the fore. Allowing machines to make life or death decisions is more akin to the dystopian Terminator films than the usual hopeful outlook linked with AI. Still, the armed forces continue to pursue AI technology.

The Pentagon has asked for substantial financial support from US legislators to improve its artificial intelligence and networking skills, as mentioned by DefenseScoop. Moreover, roles like Chief Digital and AI Officer have been created to facilitate the incorporation and application of this technology across the department.
