A study reveals that the US Army is testing GenAI for battle strategy simulations through video games

The US Army is currently investigating the use of generative AI models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, for significant military activities. The army is now utilizing simulated warfare video games to examine strategies and plan battles using AI.

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory is exploring the potential of OpenAI's creative AI technologies for strategizing combat operations, within a virtual military video game setting.

According to an article by New Scientist, researchers from the US Army are using OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4 Vision models to gather information on simulated war zones, distinguish between allies and enemies, and provide strategic military advice on attack and defense tactics. In addition to these, they are also making use of two other AI models developed from earlier technology.

In the conducted trials, AI helpers were tasked with the job of wiping out all opposing troops and securing a particular target location. After the task was assigned, the AI helpers proposed different strategies, which a user, in the role of a leader, then fine-tuned. Even though OpenAI's GPT models outperformed the rest, they also led to a higher number of losses in the process of achieving the mission goals.

The inclusion of generative AI in military planning is merely a tiny aspect of the US Army's broader initiative to utilize artificial intelligence.

Project Maven, a major artificial intelligence effort from the US Department of Defense, has demonstrated effectiveness in activities such as recognizing rocket launchers in Yemen and surface ships in the Red Sea. It has also assisted in pinpointing targets for attacks in Iraq and Syria, as per a Bloomberg report.

Nonetheless, the possible utilization of AI in combat situations brings up significant moral issues. Giving machines the power to make fatal decisions brings to mind the Terminator film franchise, as opposed to the hopeful outlook regularly linked with AI. Despite this, the military continues to push forward with AI advancement.

The US Department of Defense has asked for a substantial financial backing from American legislators to enhance its artificial intelligence and networking skills, as per a DefenseScoop report. In order to promote the integration and application of this technology across the department, new roles like Chief Digital and AI Officer have been created.
