US Army is testing GenAI for battle strategy planning through video games, according to a study

The US Army is currently investigating the use of generative AI systems, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, for vital military tasks. They are now using military simulation video games to experiment with AI-driven strategies and combat planning.

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory is examining the potential of OpenAI's generative AI solutions for strategizing military operations, within a simulated military video game setting.

The New Scientist report outlines how US Army researchers are using OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4 Vision models to gather information on virtual battlefield topography, discern between ally and adversary units, and provide strategic military advice on attack and defense tactics. In addition to these, they are also making use of two other artificial intelligence models that are built on previous technology.

During their tests, AI helpers were tasked with wiping out all opposition and securing a particular target. After getting their orders, the AI helpers came up with different strategies which were subsequently fine-tuned by a user serving as a leader. Even though OpenAI's GPT models outperformed the rest, they also led to a higher number of fatalities in the process of achieving mission goals.

The inclusion of generative AI in military tactics is merely a fraction of the US Army's broader initiative to utilize artificial intelligence.

Bloomberg reports that Project Maven, an important AI project from the US Department of Defense, has demonstrated effectiveness in tasks such as spotting rocket launchers in Yemen and surface ships in the Red Sea. It has also provided assistance in identifying targets for attacks in Iraq and Syria.

Nonetheless, the possible use of AI in war situations brings up significant moral issues. Giving machines the authority to make choices that may result in death reminds people more of the Terminator film series than the hopeful outlook usually tied to AI. Despite these concerns, the military continues to push forward with AI progression.

The Pentagon has asked for substantial financial support from US legislators to enhance its artificial intelligence and networking skills, as stated by DefenseScoop. Also, roles like Chief Digital and AI Officer have been created to facilitate the integration and utilization of this technology across the department.
