Video Games and AI: The Future of US Army’s Battle Planning Strategies

3 min read

The US military is currently carrying out trials with GenAI to evaluate battle strategies through the use of video games, according to new research. The army is considering the application of AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT in significant military procedures. At present, they are using virtual military games to experiment with AI-based tactical plans and strategies.

The US Army Research Laboratory is exploring the potential of OpenAI's creative AI technologies for strategizing combat, within a virtual military video game setting.

According to an article by New Scientist, researchers from the US Army are using OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4 Vision models to gather information about virtual battlefields, distinguish between allies and opponents, and provide military advice on attack and defense tactics. In addition to these, they are also making use of two additional AI models that are built on previous technology.

During their tests, AI helpers were assigned a task to neutralize all opposing troops and gain control of a certain target area. After understanding the task, the AI helpers devised several strategies, which were then fine-tuned by a user in the role of a leader. While OpenAI's GPT models outperformed the other models, they also caused more losses in the process of achieving mission goals.

The incorporation of generative AI into military tactics is just a minor component of the broader initiative by the US Army to utilize artificial intelligence.

The US Department of Defense's substantial AI endeavor, known as Project Maven, has demonstrated effectiveness in activities such as recognizing rocket launchers in Yemen and surface ships in the Red Sea. It has also been instrumental in assisting with target identification for attacks in Iraq and Syria, as reported by Bloomberg.

Still, the possible use of AI in war situations brings up significant moral issues. Allowing machines to make life-or-death decisions seems more akin to the dystopian Terminator films than the hopeful future typically linked to AI. Despite this, the military continues to advance in AI technology.

The Pentagon has asked for substantial financial support from US legislators to enhance its artificial intelligence and networking prowess, as conveyed by DefenseScoop. Moreover, roles like Chief Digital and AI Officer have been created to facilitate the implementation and application of this technology across the department.
