Erdogan’s Historic U.S. Visit Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict: Unpacking the Implications for West Asia

During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will be visiting the US on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's administration. Reports from Turkish news outlets suggest that Erdogan will use this visit to reemphasize his call for an end to Israeli aggression in Gaza and to advocate for a two-state resolution to the ongoing issue.

For the first time during the end of Biden's presidency, Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to visit the United States on May 9, as confirmed by a Turkish security representative on Friday.

Reuters reports that the chief of the Turkish MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives on Friday. They plan to talk about Erdogan's forthcoming visit and other issues concerning both countries, as stated by an official.

Previously, it was broadly covered by the Turkish press that Erdogan had plans to visit the US following an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face meeting between these two leaders took place during a NATO Summit in July. However, they have maintained regular phone communication.

Coincidentally, the relationship between the US and Turkey, which had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO – an effort initially thwarted by Turkey – had resumed its normal state after Turkey eventually gave its approval. Furthermore, the meeting becomes crucial considering the recent Israel-Hamas war and the potential for the conflict to spread across the whole of West Asia.

Reports from Turkish news outlets also suggested that Erdogan was set to repeat his call for Israel to cease hostilities in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has expressed disapproval of the US for its steadfast backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. In February of this year, the President of Turkey accused the US of being the cause of the previously unsuccessful peace efforts in the region, following the war that erupted when Hamas launched an assault on Israel on October 7th of the previous year.

Another crucial topic that is anticipated to dominate the discussions between the two leaders would be the purchase of F-16s by Turkey and the process of upgrading and modernizing the jets they have already obtained.
