TikTok's difficulties in the US escalate, FTC may potentially file a lawsuit for improper handling of kids' data privacy and security

TikTok could face further complications in the US as an extensive inquiry into its data management practices is nearing its conclusion. The US FTC is expected to either file a lawsuit or levy hefty penalties against TikTok and ByteDance for their improper handling of kids' data privacy and security.

TikTok and ByteDance continue to face challenges in the US. Amid a fight against a possible bill that might result in its prohibition in the US, TikTok is now confronted with the possible intervention of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Politico has reported that the FTC is close to wrapping up a long-standing investigation into a well-known social media platform. This could potentially result in a significant legal action or hefty penalties.

The investigation's main focus is reportedly on TikTok's privacy and security measures, specifically how it manages data from its young users.

Politico reports that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating possible violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). There are also claims that the company misled people by inaccurately stating that people in China did not have access to data from US users.

Furthermore, TikTok might be subjected to fines for breaching the conditions stated in its 2019 agreement with regulatory bodies concerning data protection.

The results of the FTC's probe are still unclear, but the growing regulatory scrutiny presents substantial obstacles for TikTok as it strives to secure its position in its biggest market. Importantly, after quickly gaining approval in the House, the Senate is now considering a bill that would force TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell off the app or face a complete ban in the US.

The Biden Administration has expressed its backing for this action, mirroring attempts to pressure ByteDance into giving up control of TikTok. Additionally, US intelligence authorities have imparted to legislators the alleged national security issues tied to the app, introducing more intricacy to the dilemma faced by TikTok.
