Apple's market performance deteriorates in China, as iPhone deliveries drop by around a third compared to the previous year

Apple continues to struggle with declining sales in China. The company's iPhone deliveries in the country have seen a sharp fall of about one-third compared to last year. In January 2024, Apple experienced a 39 per cent annual decrease.

Apple's financial stability in China remains uncertain. Government statistics released on Tuesday suggest a substantial drop in iPhone deliveries in China, falling by about a third compared to the previous year.

This drop indicates a tough environment for the American technology leader in the world's second biggest economy, as it encounters strong rivalry from Chinese smartphone companies.

Last week, Apple's CEO Tim Cook made a trip to Shanghai with the aim of enhancing ties with Chinese customers, providers, and regional officials.

While on his trip, Cook was present for the inauguration of a fresh Apple Store in Jing'an district of Shanghai, the biggest in Asia, and had meetings with delegates from key Apple suppliers, such as BYD's head and CEO, Wang Chuanfu. In addition, Cook took part in the China Development Forum held in Beijing, where he shared his fondness for China and its citizens.

Even with a substantial number of Apple enthusiasts in China, the firm is facing regulatory and competitive challenges. Alleged prohibitions on the use of iPhones by Chinese government departments and offices have been reported, however, the government refutes these claims.

Based on formal statistics, around 2.4 million smartphones were dispatched by international brands in February, which represented a 16.9% portion of the Chinese market. This indicates a considerable decrease from the prior month, with Apple as the most notable overseas participant.

In January, Apple dispatched approximately 5.5 million units, indicating a 39% drop compared to the previous year. To combat this downturn in deliveries, Apple is preparing to reveal its much-anticipated artificial intelligence (AI) strategy at its yearly Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The strategy is predicted to mainly revolve around significant software updates for its intelligent devices, such as the iOS 18 enhancement.

Furthermore, Apple is investigating potential collaborations with domestic AI companies for its Chinese market, with indications pointing towards Baidu as a possible provider. However, China Daily reports that there hasn't been any confirmed deal between Apple and Baidu.

In the meantime, Chinese mobile companies such as Honor and Xiaomi are advancing in AI technology, displaying their merchandise at exhibitions like MWC Barcelona. To reassert its dedication to the Chinese market, Apple intends to enhance its research and development (R&D) initiatives in Shanghai and set up a fresh R&D facility in Shenzhen.

Even with the attempts made, the sale of iPhones in China dropped almost 25% in the initial six weeks of 2024 when compared to the same timeframe the previous year. This put Apple in the fourth position, lagging behind Vivo, Huawei, and Honor. On the other hand, Huawei Technologies saw a substantial rise in sales, propelled by the high demand for its premier 5G Mate 60 Pro smartphone.
