PM Modi expresses certainty that India will spearhead the 4th Industrial Revolution, with AI playing a crucial part: PM Modi to Bill Gates

During a chat with PM Modi, Bill Gates noted the continuous enhancement and enrichment of India's Digital Public Infrastructure. PM Modi outlined the immense potential of AI in India and the significant role that technology plays in simplifying the lives of Indian citizens.

During a discussion with Bill Gates about India's technological revolution, Prime Minister Modi explained to Gates that India's development as a country was hindered during the first and second industrial revolutions due to British colonization. Nonetheless, he is confident that India will compensate for this in the fourth industrial revolution.

In the past, our progress was hindered during the initial two industrial revolutions due to our colonial status. However, now, as we are in the middle of the fourth industrial revolution where digital technology is at the heart, I strongly believe that India stands to greatly benefit," stated the Prime Minister. He also added that India has the capacity to spearhead this 4th revolution.

Prime Minister Modi outlined the ways in which India has utilized Artificial Intelligence in several facets of governance and societal matters. He referenced instances from the 2023 G20 Summit and projects such as the NaMo App. He highlighted his use of AI in the G20 summit to translate his speeches and talks into various languages. He further emphasized that technologies like ChatGPT should be employed for ongoing self-improvement.

Gates praised the continuous enhancement and growth of India's Digital Public Infrastructure. He noted that many people are familiar with the identity system (Aadhar) and digital payment systems (UPI). Moreover, he acknowledged that the government has effectively digitized all payment programs, resulting in significant cost savings and increased accessibility. In the next stage, India expanded into various areas such as assisting farmers with ready access to advice and knowledge, managing health records, and tutoring children. He stated that we are currently at a crossroads where the progress in AI will further enhance the value of these systems.

In a lighter moment, PM Modi explained to Bill Gates that AI is deeply ingrained in India, so much so that even infants are immersed in it. He humorously remarked that in India, the term for mother is 'Aai'. He added that nowadays, when a child is born, they utter 'Aai' and AI, indicating how technologically advanced children have become.

He further stated, "Leveraging AI as a miraculous solution could potentially cause severe unfairness. If AI is utilized due to complacency… then we're on the wrong track. I should compete with ChatGPT and make efforts to surpass AI…"

During their discussions, the leaders also touched upon the drawbacks and deficiencies of AI. "Microsoft is marking its 25th anniversary in India. Hence, while addressing the team here in Hyderabad, I urged them to improve the precision of our AI models. For instance, Copilot offers suggestions, but we still need to scrutinize the final decision," they said.

Gates proceeded to question, "AI presents a significant potential but also brings several issues. What is India's strategy to tackle this?" PM Modi acknowledged that not all aspects of AI are positive. Major global issues such as deepfakes and false information are linked to AI. The PM suggested ways to lessen its detrimental effects. He stated, "If someone untrained is given access to such a beneficial tool (AI), there's a high chance of misuse."

"The PM suggested that AI-produced content should have distinct watermarks to prevent confusion or deception. He emphasized that in a democratic nation such as India, anyone has the ability to use deepfake technology. It is vital to recognize that this content is produced by AI. We must consider establishing certain rules and guidelines," stated the PM.

Bill Gates recognized the difficulties that come with AI, but he was hopeful about its potential to make a positive difference. He stated, "We're in the initial stages of AI… It will accomplish tasks that seem difficult and then struggle with tasks that appear simple. AI appears to be a great prospect, yet it does present a few hurdles."

Information and confidentiality.

The issues of data and privacy are significant and are recognized by both Gates and Prime Minister Modi. Gates pondered, "In the current AI era, data is crucial. There are worries about privacy. How do we strike a balance?"

"The Prime Minister stressed that data protection is of utmost importance. He further stated that even though India has established legal provisions, the role of public awareness in this matter is just as significant," the PM continued.

He proceeded to illustrate how Digilocker has revolutionized processes in India. "Now, universities are saving certificates and degrees on cloud storage, a method which is not just cost-efficient, but also effective. In addition, there was previously a demand for strict compliance rules. We argued for a simpler approach, proposing that data should be loaded onto the cloud using shared IDs, allowing us to directly access the needed information."

The Prime Minister also disclosed that although technology was a facilitator for services in the past, it is currently a significant tool in improving the quality of life for Indians.
