Apple's downfall in China, iPhone deliveries in February dropped around one-third from the previous year
Apple's market in China consistently dwindles. The iPhone deliveries in China took a nosedive, going down by close to one-third in comparison to the last year. In the first month of 2024, Apple experienced a yearly decrease of 39 per cent.
Apple's financial stability in China remains uncertain. State-issued data on Tuesday revealed a substantial drop in Apple's iPhone deliveries in China, falling roughly by a third compared to the prior year.
This downturn indicates a tough environment for the US technology leader in the world's second biggest market, where it is up against heavy rivalry from Chinese smartphone companies.
Last week, Apple's CEO Tim Cook traveled to Shanghai with the aim of enhancing ties with Chinese customers, providers, and regional officials.
While visiting, Cook was present for the inauguration of a new Apple Store in the Jing'an district of Shanghai, which is the biggest in Asia. He also engaged in discussions with representatives from key Apple suppliers, including the chairman and CEO of BYD, Wang Chuanfu. In addition, Cook took part in the China Development Forum held in Beijing, where he shared his fondness for China and its inhabitants.
Despite having a significant number of Apple enthusiasts in China, the company is facing regulatory and competitive challenges. There have been rumors that Chinese government departments and offices have prohibited the use of iPhones, even though the government refutes such claims.
As per the official records, overseas brands have transported around 2.4 million mobile phones in February, making up 16.9 per cent of the market in China. This shows a significant decrease from the month before, with Apple as the most notable international participant.
In January, Apple distributed approximately 5.5 million units, indicating a 39% decrease compared to the previous year. To offset this reduction in distribution, Apple has intentions to reveal its highly anticipated artificial intelligence (AI) strategy at its yearly Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The strategy is predicted to focus primarily on significant software enhancements for its intelligent devices, such as the iOS 18 upgrade.
Moreover, Apple is considering collaborations with domestic AI companies for the Chinese market, with indications pointing to Baidu as a possible provider. Yet, according to China Daily, no deal has been finalized between Apple and Baidu.
Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Honor and Xiaomi are advancing in AI technology, displaying their products at industry events like MWC Barcelona. Confirming its dedication to the Chinese market, Apple intends to grow its research and development (R&D) work in Shanghai and set up a new R&D facility in Shenzhen.
Regardless of the attempts made, the sales of iPhones in China dropped almost 25% in the initial six weeks of 2024 when compared to the equivalent timeframe last year. This pushed Apple to the fourth position, trailing Vivo, Huawei, and Honor. On the other hand, Huawei Technologies saw a notable rise in sales, propelled by the high demand for its premier 5G Mate 60 Pro smartphone.
