Google AI on iPhone? Apple could collaborate with Alphabet, leveraging Gemini AI for its devices

The deployment of Google’s Gemini to fuel Apple’s forthcoming iPhones could be imminent, particularly in terms of the AI capabilities. Apple and Google are currently in talks on how Apple, a tech heavyweight based in Cupertino, can incorporate Google's AI services – supported by Alphabet, into its devices.

Apple Inc. is rumored to be considering the incorporation of Google's Gemini artificial intelligence system into the iPhone, as per a report from Bloomberg. This progress, if accurate, could drastically alter the AI industry's dynamics.

Active conversations are currently taking place about a potential agreement between the two technology powerhouses, Apple and Google, which would permit Apple to use Gemini, Google's collection of generative AI models. Insiders, who asked for their identities to be concealed due to the sensitive nature of these negotiations, have also suggested that Apple has been in dialogue with OpenAI to consider the potential benefits of utilizing their model.

If Apple and Google come to a consensus, it would enhance their current search collaboration. Google has been compensating Apple with significant amounts over the years to make its search engine the preset choice on Safari web browsers on all Apple gadgets. However, the details of the conditions, identity, and execution of this possible AI consensus are still not decided.

This collaboration might allow Gemini to tap into a large pool of users, considering Apple's expansive network of over 2 billion active devices. However, this could also hint that Apple's progress in AI technology isn't as developed as earlier expected, which could attract more attention from antitrust regulators.

As Apple gears up to incorporate new AI features into its upcoming iOS 18 operating system update, it continues to prioritize on-device operations over cloud-based tasks. Consequently, Apple is in the process of finding a collaborator who can manage the more demanding computational work related to generative AI, like producing images and writing essays from basic cues.

Spokespersons from Apple and Google chose not to speak on the issue, and OpenAI did not reply to inquiries for a statement. Even though Apple has been evaluating its own comprehensive language model, known as Ajax, from the start of the previous year, insiders indicate that its technology is still not on par with rivals such as Google, making a collaboration look more attractive.

An impending deal with Apple could signify Google's most noteworthy alliance for Gemini so far, providing a considerable enhancement to its AI initiatives. However, this cooperation between the two technology powerhouses could possibly draw regulatory attention, particularly with current antitrust probes into their existing search collaboration.

Talks are still ongoing between Apple and Google, but it's doubtful that we'll hear any official news until Apple's yearly Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It's unclear if these discussions will lead to a solid agreement, or if Apple will choose to work with other AI providers such as OpenAI or Anthropic. Regardless, Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, has assured substantial progress in AI this year, hinting at groundbreaking features coming soon for Apple's platforms.
