Anticipating Xiaomi: Prospective buyers of SU7 EV are dealing with a 7-month waitlist

Xiaomi's SU7 electric car sedan was launched last Thursday, with the starting price being $29,870. The number of pre-orders skyrocketed to 88,898 within the first day, illustrating the immense consumer interest.

It appears that Xiaomi is adopting a strategy similar to Mahindra's, leaving their clients in anticipation for their newest offering. There is a significant demand for Xiaomi's latest SU7 electric sedan, causing potential customers to endure waiting periods of up to seven months, according to a Reuters report.

Xiaomi began accepting orders for their SU7 electric car sedan last Thursday, with the starting price set at $29,870. The pre-orders skyrocketed to 88,898 within the initial 24 hours, indicating substantial consumer enthusiasm.

Reuters reported that Xiaomi's automobile application disclosed projected delivery times for the SU7 variants. The regular SU7 and the SU7 Pro are predicted to be delivered in about 18-21 weeks. Meanwhile, the most expensive model, costing 299,900 yuan, could require 27-30 weeks for delivery.

In a bid to boost sales, Xiaomi launched two exclusive "Founder's Edition" variants of the car, coupled with bonus items such as refrigerators. The first group of 5,000 Founder's Edition cars was quickly snapped up as soon as they started accepting orders last Thursday.

In reaction to the tremendous request, Lei Jun, the co-founder and CEO of Xiaomi, declared through Weibo on Sunday that they are launching a second wave of sales for the Founder's Edition. However, he did not mention the exact number of units available. Lei also noted that Xiaomi had detected and stopped irregular orders and those made by resellers during the purchase process for the Founder’s Edition.

Xiaomi's anticipatory strategy to satisfy demand is noticeable through its construction of a Beijing-based factory that can make 200,000 cars annually even before getting the regulatory green light to start production in China. In November, state-run car manufacturer BAIC Group announced intentions to produce vehicles for Xiaomi in the same facility.
