France warding off significant cyber onslaughts, hackers from Sudan with alleged Russia links take credit

France is currently dealing with massive cyberattacks targeting its online and numerous governmental services. While France hasn't confirmed this, a group of hackers known as Anonymous Sudan, suspected to be aligned with Russia, is asserting they are behind these cyberattacks.

On Monday, the French administration declared that it is warding off massive cyberattacks targeting its online and numerous government services. French authorities have characterized the extent of these assaults as being of "unmatched strength."

Additionally, the assaults have compelled the French government to initiate a unique crisis center to reinstate internet services, as per a report by the Associated Press.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal's office released a statement saying that the assaults began on Sunday evening, impacting several government departments. Nevertheless, they did not share specific information about the targets.

By the time Monday afternoon rolled around, the effects of the attacks had been lessened for the majority of services, and the ability to reach government websites was reinstated.

A hacker collective known as Anonymous Sudan, who are thought to have ties with Russia according to cybersecurity professionals, have taken credit for the cyber attacks in posts on the internet. Despite this, neither the office of the French Prime Minister nor the digital security agency has commented on these assertions or provided information about the scale of the harm inflicted.

A representative from France confirmed that the incidents were denial-of-service attacks, a frequently used cyberattack technique that floods a website with excessive data to make it unreachable.

The French authorities are diligently strengthening their cyber protection measures ahead of the Paris Olympics this summer, in response to past ransomware attacks, notably those directed at hospitals in 2021.

The ongoing Ukraine conflict has strained the relationship between Russia and Western countries to a severe stage, with Russia's President, Vladimir Putin, cautioning about the potential for direct clashes between NATO and Russia. The French government has publicly blamed Russia for a prolonged series of internet deception tactics aimed at Ukraine's allies in the West, which include actions like duplicating the French Foreign Ministry's website.

France's leader, Emmanuel Macron, has adopted a strong position against Moscow and Putin's instigated war in Ukraine. During a Paris speech, Macron underlined how crucial it is for Europe's safety to overcome Russia in Ukraine. He publicized the creation of a group to supply Ukraine with mid- and long-distance missiles and explosives, stressing the immediate necessity of the matter. Although Macron pointed out there was no agreement on sending Western soldiers to Ukraine, he insisted that all possibilities should be examined.
