VIEW: Paraplegic Man Plays Video Games Through 'Telepathy' Thanks to Elon Musk's Neuralink BCI Chip

A live video was streamed by Neuralink featuring Noland Arbaugh, a paraplegic patient utilizing Neuralink. In the video, Arbaugh demonstrates his ability to play online chess and the video game Civilization solely using his mind via the brain-computer interface.

In a pioneering step, Neuralink, a venture initiated by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, has unveiled its inaugural human trial participant for a transformative brain implant. The 29-year-old test subject, Noland Arbaugh, who has experienced paralysis from his shoulders downward for eight years due to a diving mishap, demonstrated his regained skills in a live broadcast on the social media platform X.

In the live broadcast, Arbaugh showcased his ability to play internet chess and the well-liked video game Civilization using only the Neuralink device.

With a sense of victory, he announced, "If you notice the cursor shifting across the screen, that's all my doing. Impressive, isn't it?"

Neuralink's project is focused on creating a complex interface between the brain and a computer. This would allow paralyzed individuals to manipulate digital interfaces by interpreting their brain signals.

This groundbreaking tech represents a major leap in closing the divide between human thinking and machine engagement.

After receiving authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year, Neuralink started its first human study. The trial involved paralyzed subjects to assess the effectiveness of its implant.

The path to this landmark achievement has been veiled in mystery, with Neuralink revealing very little information. The details about the trial have mainly come out via infrequent updates on social media and a few company releases.

Even though neuroscientists and ethicists have expressed concerns about the unclear proceedings of the experiment, Musk continues to stay positive about the advancement of the project.

"Musk reported on February 19 in a Spaces session on X that the patient's improvement is encouraging and they appear to have completely recovered without any known adverse consequences. He further mentioned, in response to queries about his Neuralink patients, that the patient can navigate a mouse on the screen merely by using their thoughts."

In a recent audio discussion on X, he highlighted that the first participant has displayed significant progress, skillfully controlling a computer mouse purely by thinking.

However, doubts remain about the procedures and supervision of the trial. Neuralink has not yet revealed important information like the total participant count, the locations of the trials, or the precise evaluation endpoints.

Moreover, the lack of registration on ClinicalTrials.gov, a required portal for openness in medical studies involving human participants, brings up concerns about the experiment's compliance with regulatory norms.

Neuralink persistently advances the limits of neurotechnology, consistently maintaining focus on its dedication to openness, ethical considerations, and the possible effects of its revolutionary progress for people suffering from paralysis.
