Chandrayaan-3: Global Astronomical Union formally recognizes Shiv Shakti as the name for the landing location

The Planetary System Nomenclature team of the International Astronomical Union has formally given the green light to the name Statio Shiv Shakti for the touchdown location of ISRO's Chandrayaan-3, approximately seven months after the name was put forward.

At last, it's confirmed. Roughly seven months post Prime Minister Modi's proposal to designate the Chandrayaan-3's lunar landing location as Shiv Shakti, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has formally sanctioned the name 'Statio Shiv Shakti.'

On March 19, 2024, the International Astronomical Union's Planetary System Nomenclature team greenlit the name for the emblematic landing location of Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander.

The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, which is a thorough database for planet names approved by the IAU, officially states that the landing site of the Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander has been named 'Statio Shiv Shakti' by the IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature.

The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature has announced that the term 'Statio Shiv Shakti' is inspired by Indian mythological concepts, signifying the balanced interplay between male (symbolized by "Shiva") and female (symbolized by "Shakti") elements. This name has been given to the location where Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander is slated to touch down.

The IAU is frequently recognized as the international body responsible for naming features on the surfaces of planets.

In carrying out its duties, the IAU must strictly follow particular guidelines and standards. For instance, Rule 4 highlights the global aspect of naming objects in the solar system, where the IAU has the final say on what names are chosen. On the other hand, Rule 9 forbids using names that are politically, militarily, or religiously charged, except for the names of political personas who existed before the 19th century.

On August 26, when Prime Minister Modi revealed the name of the lunar landing site as Shiv Shakti, he explained the reasoning behind the choice of name. He said that Shiva represents a commitment to the wellbeing of mankind, while Shakti provides the power to achieve that commitment. He further added that the Shiv Shakti Point on the Moon also symbolizes a link between the Himalaya and Kanyakumari, as he had earlier pointed out.

Besides dubbing the Chandrayaan-3 landing location as 'Shiva Shakti', Prime Minister Modi in August had announced that the location where Chandrayaan-2 left its imprint would be called 'Tiranga'. He conveyed that these names would act as motivation for India's pursuits and a reminder that obstacles are not synonymous with failure.

A decade and a half before the gentle landing of Chandrayaan-3, India's Chandrayaan-1 mission's lunar impact probe (MIP) made contact with the moon on November 14, 2008. The impact location was designated as 'Jawahar Point' or 'Jawahar Sthal', a name that was conveyed to the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

The U.S. Geological Survey's Astrogeology Science Centre, in partnership with the IAU and supported by NASA funding, sustains the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature. This is a crucial tool for maintaining standardization and approval of planetary naming.
