Chandrayaan-3: Global Astronomy Union formally endorses Shiv Shakti as the name for the landing spot

The Global Astronomy Union's operational team for Planetary System Naming has formally sanctioned the name Statio Shiv Shakti for the landing spot of ISRO's Chandrayaan-3. The name was suggested almost 7 months ago.

At last, it's confirmed. Roughly seven months following Prime Minister Modi's proposal to call the Chandrayaan-3 moon landing site Shiv Shakti, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has formally sanctioned the name 'Statio Shiv Shakti.'

The Planetary System Nomenclature's working group under the IAU gave their approval to the name for the renowned landing location of Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander on March 19, 2024.

The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, which is a detailed collection of planetary names approved by the IAU, officially confirms that the IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature has given the green light to the name "Statio Shiv Shakti" for the landing site of the Vikram lander from Chandrayaan-3.

The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature has declared that the term 'Statio Shiv Shakti' is derived from Indian mythology. It signifies the dual aspects of masculinity (embodied by "Shiva") and femininity (embodied by "Shakti"). This is the name given to the landing spot of the Vikram lander from Chandrayaan-3.

The IAU is frequently recognized as the worldwide governing body for designating names to features on a planet's surface.

The IAU must follow certain guidelines and standards during this procedure. For instance, Rule 4 highlights the global aspect of naming celestial bodies, with the IAU having the final say in the naming process. Additionally, Rule 9 forbids the use of names that have political, military, or religious implications, unless they belong to political individuals who existed before the 19th century.

On August 26, when Prime Minister Modi revealed the name of the lunar landing site as Shiv Shakti, he explained its significance. He stated that Shiva symbolizes a commitment to the prosperity of mankind, while Shakti represents the power needed to achieve those commitments. He went on to say that the Shiv Shakti Point on the Moon also creates a symbolic link from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari.

Besides designating the Chandrayaan-3 landing location as 'Shiva Shakti', PM Modi in August announced that the site where Chandrayaan-2 left its imprint would be called 'Tiranga'. He conveyed that this naming would act as motivation for India's efforts and a memo that obstacles are not synonymous with failure.

Before the gentle landing of India's Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft fifteen years later, the moon impact probe (MIP) of the Chandrayaan-1 mission successfully landed on the moon on November 14, 2008. The designated name for this landing site, either 'Jawahar Point' or 'Jawahar Sthal', was forwarded to the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

The Astrogeology Science Centre, which is part of the U.S. Geological Survey, works together with the IAU and is funded by NASA, to manage the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature. This is an essential tool for deciding on and approving names for planets.
