Russia is evading penalties to take over Ukraine's Starlink system for orchestrating drone strikes

Numerous news sources and military personnel indicate that the Russians might have breached and seized control of Starlink. These reports further imply that Russian forces are employing Starlink to target Ukrainian troops.

Ukraine's front-line soldiers have reported problems with the essential Starlink internet service, owned by Elon Musk, which they use to manage Kyiv's drone fleet. They suspect that their Starlink system is being unlawfully utilized by Russian forces, despite the sanctions enforced by the US.

According to a CNN report, soldiers on the front lines have reported a significant decrease in connection speeds in recent months. They have also experienced numerous other issues related to connectivity.

The grievances have emerged simultaneously with an increase in observations of Russian use of satellite internet services in Ukraine, run by Musk's SpaceX. Moreover, Russian individuals have reportedly posted on social media about successfully bypassing sanctions on these devices by buying them via other nations.

The precise reason for the declining service in Ukraine is still unknown. Despite this, neither Starlink, SpaceX, nor Elon Musk have responded to requests for comment, according to a report by CNN.

Military personnel and experts propose that there may be an increased density of Starlink terminals in disputed regions than in past months, which could possibly affect internet connectivity speeds.

The Starlink internet service has been a crucial asset to the Ukrainian military following the 2022 invasion. It has facilitated immediate transmission of drone footage between different units and ensured communication in zones where conventional mobile services have been interrupted due to warfare.

Service providers in the Zaporizhzhia region have been experiencing problems in recent weeks. Misha, a telecoms worker, pointed out recurring issues like frequent dropouts and slower speeds, adversely affecting their work. Another drone handler, referred to as Anton from the 65th Mechanised Brigade, reported a substantial reduction in speed from January, blaming it on the growing demand for Starlink terminals among the local units.

Several Ukrainian groups along the battle lines have confirmed issues with Starlink's speed and observed a rise in its use by Russians. However, they have opted to stay unnamed due to the delicate nature of the matter.

Ukraine's attempts to tackle the usage of Starlink by Russia in territories under their control have prompted the country to suggest new legal terms for satellite communications. The goal is to establish an approved list of devices that Kyiv can use. Private discussions with SpaceX and US representatives have been characterized as sensitive, due to worries about providing Ukrainian forces with access while stopping Russia from misusing the service.

Contrary to Elon Musk's earlier claims that Starlink would not operate in Russia, recent online conversations suggest the opposite. Russian crowdfunding campaigns are openly talking about buying and setting up Starlink terminals in areas of Ukraine that are currently under Russian control.

Reacting to these events, US Congressional Oversight Committee's Democrats have urgently sought a briefing from Starlink about the usage of their devices by Russia, voicing concerns about possible breaches of US sanctions.

As circumstances continue to change, interested parties stay alert, aiming to lessen the inappropriate use of technology in the persistent discord between Ukraine and Russia.
