NVIDIA introduces the new Blackwell B200 AI mega-chip, stating it's 30 times more powerful than their existing top-tier H100

NVIDIA has unveiled a new series of AI GPUs named Blackwell. The premier B200 GPU mega-chip offers an impressive 20 petaflops of FP4 power, which is roughly 30 times quicker than the H100 and approximately 25 times more energy-efficient.

NVIDIA, a leader in AI hardware, has astounded the technology industry by unexpectedly unveiling an entirely new platform. Known as Blackwell, this new series of AI chips pledges to enhance AI computing performance substantially and improve energy efficiency.

CEO Jensen Huang disclosed the introduction of the new Blackwell series of AI chips at the company's yearly GTC event in San Jose. These chips offer unmatched speed and efficiency, representing a major advancement in the operation of artificial intelligence machines.

NVIDIA's Blackwell chips, an homage to mathematician David Harold Blackwell, showcases an impressive improvement in performance compared to their earlier model, the H100 chips. As per Huang, these Blackwell chips exhibit a speed that is seven to 30 times greater than the H100, and they use significantly less power – precisely, about 25 times less. The latest Blackwell B200 GPU and the GB200 “superchip” are the frontrunners in this series.

Nvidia states that their newest B200 GPU has an impressive 20 petaflops of FP4 power, thanks to its 208 billion transistors. Furthermore, Nvidia suggests that combining two of these GPUs with a Grace CPU in the GB200 setup can increase the performance of LLM inference tasks by up to 30 times, possibly attaining a much higher efficiency. Nvidia maintains that this arrangement could cut down costs and energy use by up to 25 times when compared to the H100.

Huang stressed the crucial part Blackwell GPUs play in propelling what he calls the "new Industrial Revolution", emphasizing the transformative power of generative AI. The exceptional strength of Blackwell chips is found in their unmatched operational abilities. With potential speeds reaching 20 petaflops, Blackwell significantly surpasses the performance of the H100, providing four times as much computational power.

This significant advancement is made possible by incorporating 208 billion transistors, a considerable growth compared to the H100's 80 billion. NVIDIA accomplished this by linking two large chip dies, allowing for ultra-fast communication at rates of up to 10 terabytes per second.

NVIDIA has not yet revealed the cost of Blackwell chips, but their technology continues to be highly sought after. Some start-ups have even accumulated funds purely because they possess NVIDIA's H100 AI GPUs. With the delivery times extending to almost a year, getting hold of NVIDIA's AI chips has become a critical concern for companies wanting to stay competitive in the AI field.
