NVIDIA introduces the new Blackwell B200 AI superchip, stating it's 30 times more powerful than their present leading H100

NVIDIA has presented a new series of AI GPUs named Blackwell. The premier B200 GPU superchip features an impressive 20 petaflops of FP4 power, approximately 30 times faster than the H100, and consumes around 25 times less energy.

NVIDIA, a leading company in AI hardware, has unexpectedly introduced an entirely new platform. This new platform, named Blackwell, consists of a brand-new series of AI chips. These chips offer substantial improvements in AI computing performance and enhanced energy efficiency.

CEO Jensen Huang announced at the company's yearly GTC event in San Jose, the introduction of the new Blackwell series of AI chips. These chips are projected to offer unmatched speed and efficiency, representing a substantial advancement in the functioning of artificial intelligence machines.

NVIDIA's Blackwell chips, named after the mathematician David Harold Blackwell, significantly outperform their predecessors, the H100 chips. Huang states that these Blackwell chips operate at a speed that is seven to 30 times faster than the H100s, and they only use approximately 1/25th of the power. The standout models in this new line are the Blackwell B200 GPU and the GB200 "superchip."

Nvidia reports that its newest B200 GPU features an impressive 20 petaflops of FP4 power, thanks to its 208 billion transistors. Furthermore, Nvidia suggests that combining two of these GPUs with a Grace CPU in the GB200 setup can enhance LLM inference workloads performance by up to 30 times, thereby potentially increasing efficiency significantly. Nvidia insists that this configuration could decrease expenses and energy use by up to 25 times when compared to the H100.

This innovative technology is set to transform the field of AI applications, given their potential to consume a lot of resources.

Huang underscored the critical importance of Blackwell GPUs in propelling what he called the "new Industrial Revolution", emphasizing the game-changing possibilities of generative AI. With backing from top corporations in diverse industries, NVIDIA is determined to unlock the full power of AI, transforming sectors and spurring innovation.

The impressive strength of Blackwell chips comes from their unmatched performance potential. Reaching speeds as high as 20 petaflops, Blackwell significantly surpasses the H100's performance—increasing the computing power fourfold.

The significant advancement is made possible through the incorporation of 208 billion transistors, a noteworthy rise compared to the 80 billion in the H100. NVIDIA accomplished this by linking two large chip dies, allowing extremely rapid communication at rates reaching 10 terabytes per second.

NVIDIA's impact on the AI field has been emphasized by praise from major industry players. The importance of NVIDIA's hardware is evident from the accolades it has received from CEOs such as OpenAI's Sam Altman, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, and Alphabet's Sundar Pichai who have all praised Blackwell's progress in performance. Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, has also expressed similar views, appreciating Blackwell as a driving force for innovation in AI computing.

NVIDIA has not revealed the cost of Blackwell chips yet, but their technology continues to be highly sought after. Even though NVIDIA's products tend to be expensive, tech firms see acquiring these chips as a mark of prestige. Some startups have even managed to gather funds simply because they have NVIDIA’s H100 AI GPUs. Given that the delivery wait times can extend to nearly a year, getting hold of NVIDIA’s AI chips is seen as crucial for companies aiming to stay competitive in the AI field.

NVIDIA's ongoing advancements in AI computing have reached a new milestone with the introduction of Blackwell. This marks the beginning of a new phase of invention and development, catapulting the industry to never-before-seen levels.
