Nothing Phone 2a Evaluation: Establishing high standards for affordable smartphones in 2024
Nothing holds a robust product, the Phone 2a, which is predicted to have booming sales. Besides equipping the Phone 2a with impressive specifications and a stunning AMOLED screen, Nothing has also set a very competitive price for the device.
Advantages: It boasts a high-end design for its cost, is sturdily built and of high quality, and features a lively, luminescent screen. It offers a wealth of personalization features, is free of unnecessary software, and delivers robust performance. It has an impressive battery lifespan, and its glyph interface remains as thrilling as it was on its first phone model. It is one of the top smartphones available for its cost.
Drawbacks: The plastic rear cover is slick. The back panel is likely to get smudged and scratched. The camera's HDR functionality could be improved. It employs UFS 2.2 storage. There is no included charger in the package.
The base model with 8GB+128GB is priced at Rs 23,999 and has received a rating of 4.25 out of 5.
A significant complaint about the Nothing Phone 2 was its steep cost, even though it provided robust technology, impressive efficiency, a top-notch screen, lots of software functions, and an attractive look. Many believed it was priced too high.
Nothing has gleaned important insights from their past experiences, and their newest product, the Phone 2a, reflects this with its appealingly competitive price. But its cost-effectiveness isn't the only feature that makes it special. The Phone 2a stands out due to its luxurious design that grabs attention and a user-centric software interface, offering benefits that surpass its cost.
The Phone 2a continues the tradition set by its forerunners, the Nothing Phone 1 and the Nothing Phone 2, by maintaining a distinctive and unique character, rather than focusing on a competition of technical specifications.
However, there are certain significant concessions, such as utilizing USF 2.2 storage and the decision to provide a clear back cover within this cost bracket. Consequently, the issue we need to address is: do these concessions detract from an otherwise outstanding gadget, or are they insignificant enough to ignore?
Review of Nothing Phone 2a: Structure
Nothing has accomplished an impressive feat with its recent launch, the Nothing Phone 2a. Even though it's priced reasonably, the device still exudes a high-end vibe.
Even though the Phone 2a appears significantly distinct from the Phone 2, it still retains the unique attribute that made the Phone 2 one of the most aesthetically pleasing smartphones of the previous year. The Phone 2a maintains an incredibly stylish design, topped off with a see-through back panel that affords users a glimpse into the inner workings of the device. This allows them to admire several finely detailed features such as the coiled NFC components, assorted labels and multitudes of tiny screws.
Indeed, you continue to receive the enhanced Glyph interface.
Nonetheless, to maintain affordability, Nothing has made a few trade-offs. For example, the back's Glyph Interface has been pared down, and the Phone 2a comes with just three LED strips. The wireless charging coils have also been removed. On the bright side, the phone does provide resistance to dust and water with an IP54 rating.
Despite the reduction in the quantity of LED strips on the Glyph Interface, their capabilities remain akin to their predecessors. The LED lights continue to inform users about alerts from different applications, countdown clocks, and timers for delivery or ride-sharing apps, all of which can be personalised.
The rear panel's shiny exterior tends to attract smudges quickly, regardless of whether your hands are oily. Its material is not as durable as glass, making it prone to scratches. On the darker version, these scratches and fingerprints stand out; however, on the white devices, these marks are much less noticeable.
Similar to earlier models from the London-based company, the Nothing Phone 2a features a see-through back cover. However, instead of clear glass, it uses a polycarbonate plate. Despite the back cover giving the impression of glass and appearing quite high-end, it doesn't possess the same strength as glass.
The arrangement and positioning of the dual camera setup has been altered. It is now located centrally on the top half of the phone, nestled in the middle of the NFC coil. Instead of a rigid cutout for the camera protrusion, the polycarbonate panel gently curves around it with a subtle tilt.
The design includes the power button on the right side and the volume controls on the left, both are conveniently placed for one-hand usage. The device also features a USB Type-C port at the base, accompanied by the speaker openings and the slot for the SIM card.
On the front, there's a 6.7-inch screen surrounded by slim, even bezels, which are significantly slimmer than those on previous models from Nothing. This gives the Nothing Phone 2a a more high-end look.
Nothing underlines its dedication to eco-friendliness by using completely recycled aluminium in the phone's middle frame, along with tin, copper foil, steel, and plastic in its overall manufacturing. This leads to a phone that exudes solidity and heft.
Review of Nothing Phone 2a: Screen Quality
Typically, smartphones within this price range don't offer high-quality screens. The viewing perspectives and color accuracy are often mediocre, particularly for phones under 25,000 Rupees. The Nothing Phone 2a, however, deviates from this norm.
The Phone 2a boasts a large 6.7-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1084X2412. Its display is surrounded by balanced bezels, giving it a sleek appearance. Moreover, it offers a flexible refresh rate ranging from 30-120Hz, enhancing the sharpness of the display whether you're perusing text-heavy pages or streaming videos on your preferred platform. Its performance is also impressive when it comes to mobile gaming.
The Phone 2a by Nothing has an outstanding maximum brightness level of 1300 nits, which is particularly noticeable when you turn on the HDR video feature in the screen settings. The brightness is equally impressive, even when exposed to direct sunlight.
In these configurations, users can effortlessly transition from the vibrant "Alive" to the regular "Standard" color tone modes, and adjust the color temperature according to their preference. But, it's important to remember that the screen does not provide DCI-P3 coverage.
The HDR mode is automatically turned on, resulting in extremely vivid colours that make the display stand out and greatly improve the visual experience. Even if you change to "Standard" mode, the colours remain vibrant, guaranteeing an engaging viewing experience. What specifically caught our attention was the incredibly intense, deep blacks and how they remained consistent even at unusual viewing angles.
Additionally, the screen is safeguarded by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, offering strong defense against unintentional falls and scrapes. The Nothing Phone 2a stands out with its rich blacks, vibrant hues, and wide viewing perspectives, providing a captivating visual experience.
A fingerprint scanner is also included below the display, which is notably fast and reactive.
In general, the screen of the Nothing Phone 2a is notable for its vivid hues, captivating imagery, and robust construction, and it gains our commendation unreservedly.
The Nothing Phone 2a review focuses on its camera. This phone boasts a two-camera setup, which is a typical feature for phones within this price range. It comes with a 50MP camera, equipped with OIS and an f/1.88 aperture, in addition to another 50MP sensor with an ultra-wide lens that provides a sizeable 114-degree field of view. On the front, it has a 32MP camera, the same as the one found on the Phone 2.
The camera application from Nothing is uncomplicated and easy to navigate. It places all the features within easy reach, and the settings that are most often adjusted can be accessed through a quick swipe. The app comes packed with a variety of camera settings including Slow-motion, Time-lapse, Portrait, Night mode, Motion capture, Panorama mode and more. For those desiring detailed control, there's an Expert Mode available. Additionally, the app provides the ability to capture raw images for detailed photo editing.
One area where the cameras really excel is in HDR. Nothing has unveiled a sophisticated HDR software named Ultra HDR, which was created through a partnership with Google.
The primary camera performs exceptionally well in ample light, yielding vivid hues and sharp details, provided your photos are correctly underexposed while using HDR mode more frequently. This is particularly noticeable when capturing images directed towards the sun or any other intense light source, as it occasionally overexposes the brighter parts of the photo.
Conversely, the ultra-wide camera managed to perform well in most scenarios, even highly difficult ones. It regularly achieved the right exposure without requiring much assistance from us, largely due to its excellent dynamic range.
The primary camera functioned impressively even under dim light conditions, capturing a significant amount of detail and producing clear and vibrant colors without making the pictures overly bright. The ultra-wide camera also performed well in both bright and dim light conditions, although the color accuracy was slightly different from the primary camera.
The Nothing Phone 2a is capable of filming videos in 1080p quality both at 30 and 60 frames per second (fps), while 4K video recording can only be done at 30 fps. The videos recorded at 1080p/60fps are notably clear and precise, even under dim light, and they maintain stability. This makes them ideal for dynamic scenarios such as walking or filming while on the move in a vehicle.
Even though 4K/30fps videos uphold decent quality, they can appear somewhat unstable. The phone offers a unique feature known as "action mode" to improve steadiness, but it's solely accessible for 1080p/30fps recording.
Additionally, users have the option to select between standard H.264 and H.265 video encoding.
The camera on the Nothing Phone 2a may not be the best in its price bracket, but it surpasses what most other brands deliver at the same cost. If you primarily capture pictures during daylight, you'll likely be satisfied with the image quality it delivers.

Review of Nothing Phone 2a: Functionality, software usage, and user interface. The Nothing Phone 2a is equipped with a fairly proficient processor considering its cost. Nothing has collaborated with MediaTek to modify the Dimensity 7200, now referred to as the Dimensity 7200 Pro.
Despite keeping the same top clock speed of 2.8 GHz, the tuning seems to emphasize power efficiency. Combined with as much as 12GB LPDDR4X RAM and a maximum of 256 GBUFS 2.2 storage, the phone operates quite well in general. The only drawback is the rate of the storage.
The performance of the chipset is quite robust considering its category. Although it may not achieve the highest scores in benchmarks, the Nothing Phone 2a demonstrates its proficiency for daily usage. During the evaluation phase, I didn't experience any noteworthy delays or disruptions while operating the phone. In general, it provides a seamless user experience, partly due to its display.
In our assessments, the Phone 2a exhibited minimal heat reduction, even when playing intensive games such as Call of Duty: Mobile and BGMI. Furthermore, it maintained a relatively low temperature even after half an hour of gaming.
The standout feature of the Nothing Phone 2a is its operating system, the Nothing OS 2.5, which is derived from Android 14. Over recent years, the Nothing OS has undergone significant enhancements since its initial launch. It's considered among the top Android interfaces available. It's simple but brimming with capabilities. Quick animations, seamless execution of day-to-day tasks, and additional cool features such as the AI Wallpaper Generator and Glyph Composer are some of its highlights. Moreover, there's an abundance of widgets that Nothing has crafted.
A major advantage is the lack of unnecessary software; your phone will not be filled with unwanted apps or intrusive advertisements. The only applications you will see are a handful of Nothing apps, in addition to the typical Google ones. This is quite uncommon, particularly for mid-range phones.
In terms of updates, Nothing is really putting in a lot of effort with the Phone 2a. Throughout our evaluation period, we received two updates that enhanced the camera's functionality. Furthermore, Nothing has assured users of three years of operating system updates and four years of security updates for the Phone 2a.
The review of the Nothing Phone 2a focuses on its battery. The phone is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery, the biggest that Nothing has ever installed in a phone. Consequently, the battery life is impressive. With our constant and intense use, which included binge-watching, gaming, and snapping numerous photos, the device consistently lasted for about two days.
Though you could potentially deplete the Nothing Phone 2a's battery within one day, it would require considerable usage to do so. For average users, the device is designed to comfortably last an entire day.
It's not impressive that Nothing has decided to lower expenses by not including a charger in the box. Additionally, there's no option for wireless charging.
The gadget can handle 45W charging, which is mediocre compared to other gadgets that provide much quicker charging rates. Using a 60W charger, we managed to fully charge the gadget from zero to full in roughly one hour. While this may be acceptable for the majority of users, the absence of extremely fast charging options may let some down.
Review of Nothing Phone 2a: ConclusionNothing has an outstanding product in their possession. The Phone 2a truly establishes a fresh standard for what an affordable smartphone ought to be. Along the way, it also uncovers a large number of smartphone manufacturers who are vying in this market.
