The US government states that China's strike on Microsoft could have been avoided with proper attention to cybersecurity

The US Cyber Safety Review Board mentions in a harsh critique that Microsoft could have effortlessly averted the Chinese assault last summer, if cybersecurity had been a priority.

A significant governmental advisory panel delivered a harsh criticism on Tuesday night, declaring that a Chinese spying effort aimed at Microsoft the previous summer could have been avoided and should not have occurred.

The American Cyber Safety Review Board, functioning under the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), has been examining the security violation at Microsoft since the beginning of August, according to an Axios report.

In July, Chinese-supported cyber intruders were found in Microsoft's cloud systems. They successfully gained access to the emails of nearly 25 government entities and officials, including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and a number of State officials.

This occurrence sparked considerable worry throughout Washington, considering Microsoft's role as the main cloud service supplier for the US government.

The report states that the security breach that took place in July resulted from preventable mistakes and Microsoft's inability to identify the violation of key security protocols. The committee devoted seven months to probe and consult with other cloud service providers to determine Microsoft's mistakes. The report emphasizes the recent choices made by Microsoft that resulted in a decreased focus on enterprise security investments and comprehensive risk management.

Even with the serious nature of the circumstances, three members of the board refrained from participating in the probe due to monetary or job-related conflicts. Concurrently, authorities cautioned that the Chinese government group behind the breach could potentially aim at other prominent US firms down the line.

The publication of the report has rekindled fears among Microsoft's rivals and detractors, asserting that the firm's supremacy in offering cloud services and corporate software could jeopardize national security. Certain specialists are in favor of having the liberty to select the most suitable technologies for particular requirements, underlining the significance of cybersecurity in governmental and corporate domains.

In reaction to the criticism, Microsoft has already initiated changes within its cybersecurity environment, including broadening access to security records and revamping its security approach. The firm values the inquiry's work and is examining the final document for further security improvements.

In the future, CISA aims to set a foundation of robust security protocols for cloud service providers. Their goal is to guarantee openness and ongoing enhancement in cybersecurity strategies.
