The OpenAI-driven humanoid is hailed as the 'most human-like robot ever', set to compete with Tesla's Optimus

The humanoid robot, Figure 01, by Figure, has unveiled new capabilities incorporated into it through OpenAI’s LLMs. With these enhancements, Figure asserts that their Figure 01 robot has now reached the milestone of being the most human-like robot to date.

The tech startup, Figure, has recently revealed a video demonstrating its humanoid robot, Figure 01. The robot is seen interacting with an engineer and performing domestic tasks such as tidying up dishes.

The presentation, coming after Figure's collaboration news with OpenAI, showcases the robot's capacity for "speech-to-speech reasoning." This leaves the audience in a state of uncertainty, not knowing whether to be amazed or anxious.

The footage shows Figure 01 pinpointing items on the table, such as a red apple, and fulfilling the person's demand for food by smoothly passing the apple. When asked why it chose the apple, the robot articulates its rationale, pausing in a manner similar to a human, which adds to a slightly eerie sensation.

With the use of OpenAI, Figure 01 has gained the ability to engage in comprehensive dialogues with humans. OpenAI models contribute to advanced visual and linguistic cognition. Even though Figure hasn't yet released a product for commercial use, the display suggests a possibly unsettling future where the line between helpfulness and discomfort is blurred due to interactions with AI-powered robots, especially in domestic chores such as washing dishes.

Figure's latest collaboration with ChatGPT creator, OpenAI, is intended to provide its upcoming robots with enhanced language comprehension abilities, enabling rapid learning. Earlier videos demonstrated Figure 01's skills in handling a coffee maker, moving around, and manipulating items.

In partnership with OpenAI, Figure is working on creating advanced AI models for humanoid robots. These models aim to help the robots understand and make sense of language inputs, as mentioned in a prior press release. The most recent demonstration indicates substantial progress towards this bold objective.

In the meantime, rival company Tesla is under examination following a contentious video that purportedly shows its humanoid robot, Optimus, folding a shirt. This event highlights the challenges Tesla has to overcome in the competitive field of sophisticated humanoid robotics.

With OpenAI's backing, Figure is breaking new ground in the creation of humanoid robots, and this continues to shape the technology landscape. This progress presents both potential benefits and obstacles for the future of AI-powered robots.
