OpenAI-backed android deemed 'the most human-like robot yet', set to rival Tesla's Optimus
Figure's android, Figure 01, unveiled new capabilities added through OpenAI's LLMs. Boasting these new capabilities, Figure asserts that their Figure 01 android now holds the record for being the most similar to a human than any other humanoid robot.
The tech company Figure has recently revealed a video demonstrating its humanoid robot, Figure 01, interacting with an engineer and performing domestic tasks such as tidying up dishes.
The showcase, which comes after Figure's collaboration news with OpenAI, emphasizes the robot's capacity for "speech-to-speech reasoning." This leaves the audience uncertain about whether to be amazed or worried.
The footage shows Figure 01 pinpointing items on the table, such as a red apple, and smoothly complies with the human examiner's demand for food by giving them the apple. On being asked about its selection, the robot clarifies its reasoning, even incorporating a pause in its dialogue similar to a human, which results in an eerie sensation.
With the help of OpenAI, Figure 01 is now capable of engaging in comprehensive discussions with humans. OpenAI's models offer advanced visual and linguistic comprehension. Even though Figure doesn't have a product ready for the market yet, their demonstration suggests a somewhat unsettling future. In this future, engagements with robots powered by artificial intelligence could make it difficult to distinguish between helpfulness and discomfort, especially for domestic chores such as washing dishes.
Figure's latest collaboration with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is intended to outfit its forthcoming robots with enhanced linguistic comprehension abilities, thus speeding up their learning process. Earlier videos have demonstrated Figure 01's skills in handling a coffee machine, walking, and manipulating items.
In partnership with OpenAI, Figure is working to create advanced AI models for humanoid robots. These models would allow the robots to understand and make decisions based on language inputs, as mentioned in a past press release. Recent demonstrations indicate substantial progress towards this challenging objective.
In the meantime, rival company Tesla is under examination following a contentious video that purportedly showed its human-like robot, Optimus, folding a piece of clothing. This event highlights the challenges Tesla needs to overcome in the field of sophisticated human-like robotics.
