Microsoft, even with the ability to use ChatGPT's models, alleges that Google has an undue advantage in generative AI
Microsoft is attempting to implicate Google as the EU probes into the technology behemoth and its $10 billion stake in OpenAI. Despite the leading role of OpenAI as an AI model, Microsoft contends that Google has a leg up on the competition due to their AI-oriented chips and substantial data.
In an unexpected attempt to shift focus from its $10 billion investment in OpenAI, Microsoft has leveled accusations at Google, alleging that the tech behemoth has an unjust lead in the field of generative artificial intelligence (AI).
Despite Microsoft's deep ties with OpenAI, one of the leading entities in AI currently, they are still facing allegations. It's worth mentioning that Microsoft is privy to all of OpenAI's LLMs and various AI models, which have repeatedly demonstrated superior performance compared to Google's Gemini AI.
During conversations with EU antitrust authorities, Microsoft put forth allegations that Google, supported by Alphabet, has an unfair advantage in generative AI. They asserted this is due to Google's extensive data collection and their use of dedicated AI chips.
This underlines the continuing competition between the two technology giants.
Microsoft's comments were triggered by an investigation launched by the European Commission earlier this year about competition in the field of generative AI.
There has been a significant increase in the demand for Generative AI. Perfect examples include Microsoft's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini chatbot. Nonetheless, there are rising anxieties about the possibility of spreading false information and counterfeit content.
Microsoft highlighted Google's distinctive stance, stating that the company's in-house AI chips and its vast exclusive data from platforms such as Google Search and YouTube give it a significant edge.
Microsoft claims that Google's ability to tap into a massive library of 14 billion videos on YouTube for the purpose of training its AI models gives it an unfair advantage that other developers simply don't have.
Additionally, Microsoft underscored the supremacy of Google and Apple in the realm of AI-driven voice assistants, like Google Assistant and Apple's Siri. According to Microsoft, these entrenched tech giants are well-positioned to continue their dominance in the area of generative AI, leaving minimal opportunities for new entrants.
Considering its financial involvement in OpenAI, Microsoft attempted to ease worries about possible monopoly problems originating from partnerships between large corporations and emerging businesses. It highlighted several startups, including Anthropic, Mistral, and Cohere, that have obtained financial backing from significant entities such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, and NVIDIA.
Microsoft promoted the idea of encouraging fair competition collaborations in the AI industry as a way to avoid monopoly behaviours and guarantee an even competitive environment.
As authorities investigate Microsoft's investment exceeding $10 billion in OpenAI, the ongoing discussion about equity and rivalry in AI development progresses, with potential effects extending well past the technology sector.
