Microsoft is attempting to implicate Google as the EU probes into the technology tycoon and its $10 billion venture in OpenAI. Despite OpenAI being a formidable force in AI models, Microsoft insists that Google holds the upper hand due to their AI-specific chips and massive data resources.
In an unexpected attempt to shift focus from its $10 billion investment in OpenAI, Microsoft has criticized Google, alleging that the tech behemoth has an unjust edge in the sphere of generative artificial intelligence (AI).
Despite Microsoft's considerable engagement with OpenAI, which is arguably the leading AI institution currently, they're still facing accusations. Worth mentioning is that Microsoft can utilize all of OpenAI's Language Learning Models (LLMs) and other AI systems, which have repeatedly shown superiority over Google's Gemini AI.
During conversations with EU antitrust authorities, Microsoft alleged that Google, supported by Alphabet, has attained an advantageous position in the generative AI field because of its extensive data collection and unique AI chips.
This underscores the continuous competition between the two technology giants.
Microsoft's comments were triggered by a probe launched by the European Commission earlier this year, investigating competitive practices in the generative AI sector.
The interest in Generative AI has significantly increased lately. Prime examples of this are Microsoft's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini chatbot. Nonetheless, worries have been raised about the possibility of spreading false information and counterfeit content.
Microsoft highlighted Google's special status, stating that Google's self-produced AI chips and the vast amount of proprietary data it possesses from platforms such as Google Search and YouTube give it a significant edge.
Microsoft states that Google's ability to tap into a vast library of 14 billion YouTube videos provides an unrivaled resource for training its AI systems, an advantage other developers do not possess.
Additionally, Microsoft emphasized the supremacy of Google and Apple in the realm of AI-driven voice assistants, like Google Assistant and Siri from Apple. According to Microsoft, these entrenched competitors are poised to retain their top spots in the generative AI sector, leaving scant opportunities for new entrants.
Microsoft attempted to ease worries about possible monopoly problems that could emerge from partnerships between large corporations and newcomers, given its own financial contributions to OpenAI. It highlighted several emerging companies, such as Anthropic, Mistral, and Cohere, that have received funding from dominant players like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, and NVIDIA.
Microsoft promoted the idea of encouraging partnerships that encourage competition in the AI industry to avoid monopoly and guarantee fair competition.
