Microsoft recruits Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, to head the new customer-focused AI group

Microsoft has intentions to intensively grow its consumer AI offerings and has designated DeepMind's co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to spearhead this division.

Microsoft has named Mustafa Suleyman, who is one of the founders of DeepMind, as the head of its consumer AI department. This critical decision could potentially accelerate the creation of AI products.

For the first time, the technology behemoth has appointed a specific head to manage this crucial sector. Suleyman, who has previously held a managerial position at competitor Inflection AI, is now part of Microsoft.

As the CEO and executive vice president of Microsoft's newly established AI department, Suleyman will be at the forefront of developing the Copilot assistant. His goal is to establish Microsoft as a formidable player in the artificial intelligence sphere, posing a serious challenge to the Big Five in Silicon Valley, especially Google.

Karén Simonyan, who co-founded Inflection AI along with Suleyman, will take on the position of chief scientist in the division. Both Simonyan and Suleyman will be directly answering to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, emphasizing the critical role they play in pushing Microsoft's AI projects ahead.

Microsoft's launch of the Copilot assistant has been referred to as "disorderly," encountering problems like modest gains in market share against Google's search supremacy and safety worries about AI tools like Copilot. Regardless of these obstacles, Microsoft continues to stand by its collaboration with OpenAI, the organization that supplies the basic AI frameworks for Copilot.

Suleyman's move to Microsoft involves merging various crucial individuals from Inflection AI into the firm's AI department, which highlights Microsoft's pledge to enhance its AI engineering and research workforce. Nadella stressed the significance of this alliance, asserting Microsoft's commitment to further AI advancement in cooperation with OpenAI.

The timing of this announcement aligns with Microsoft's impending Surface event, named "New Era of Work," where the corporation plans to demonstrate improvements in AI incorporation throughout its offerings, such as Copilot, Windows, and Surface. As Microsoft remains focused on advancing AI, Suleyman's guidance is set to significantly influence the development of customer AI technologies within the organization.
