Mustafa Suleyman, DeepMind's co-founder, has been hired by Microsoft to spearhead their new consumer AI group

Microsoft aims to substantially grow its consumer AI offerings and has selected Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, to head up this sector.

Microsoft has named Mustafa Suleyman, DeepMind's co-founder, as the head of its consumer AI department, a significant step that could hasten the creation of AI products.

For the first time, the tech titan has appointed a dedicated head to supervise this crucial field. Suleyman, hailing from Microsoft's competitor, Inflection AI, where he held a managerial position, has joined their ranks.

In his role as the chief executive officer and executive vice president of Microsoft's newly established AI division, Suleyman will lead the development of the Copilot assistant. His goal is to make Microsoft a strong contender against the top five Silicon Valley companies, especially Google, in the field of artificial intelligence.

Suleyman is joined in this endeavor by Karén Simonyan, a fellow co-founder of Inflection AI, who takes on the position of chief scientist in the department. Both Suleyman and Simonyan will be directly answerable to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, underlining the critical role they play in propelling Microsoft's AI projects.

Microsoft's introduction of the Copilot assistant has had its fair share of obstacles. It struggled to significantly increase its market share in comparison to Google's search supremacy. There have also been concerns regarding the security of AI tools including Copilot. Regardless of these issues, Microsoft continues to uphold its collaboration with OpenAI, which supplies the basic AI frameworks for Copilot.

Suleyman's move to Microsoft includes incorporating numerous primary participants from Inflection AI into the corporation's AI department, highlighting Microsoft's pledge to enhance its pool of skilled professionals in AI engineering and research. Nadella stressed the significance of this alliance, confirming Microsoft's commitment to furthering AI innovation in conjunction with OpenAI.

The timing of this announcement aligns with Microsoft's forthcoming Surface event, dubbed "New Era of Work," where the tech giant is anticipated to highlight advancements in AI integration throughout its offerings, such as Copilot, Windows, and Surface. As Microsoft maintains its focus on AI development, the role of Suleyman's leadership is expected to be crucial in influencing the direction of consumer AI technologies within the corporation.
