SEE: ISRO's 'Pushpak' aircraft, India's initial Reusable Launch Vehicle triumphantly concludes trial touchdown

The Pushpak launch vehicle symbolizes India's innovative initiative to transform space travel, and its victorious touchdown signifies further progress in this pursuit. The comprehensive project was established with an approximate budget of Rs 100 crore.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reached an important achievement on Friday by successfully carrying out the landing mission of its Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), dubbed 'Pushpak', from the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) in Challakere, close to Karnataka's Chitradurga. The event was graced by the presence of ISRO chairman S Somanath and other high-ranking officials.

ISRO has done it once more! The winged vehicle, Pushpak (RLV-TD), expertly landed by itself on the runway after being launched from an unusual position,” the space agency shared on X.

The airborne craft, known as Pushpak, was hoisted by an Indian Airforce Chinook helicopter and dropped from a height of 4.5 km. Upon release and 4km away from the runway, Pushpak independently moved towards the runway, making necessary cross-range adjustments. It landed accurately on the runway, stopping with the help of its brake parachute, landing gear brakes, and nose wheel steering system, according to a statement from ISRO.

This trial signified the third voyage of Pushpak, which is a part of multiple tests intended to improve its robotic landing skills in increasingly challenging circumstances. Although the practical implementation of Pushpak is still quite a few years in the future, this accomplishment emphasizes India's determined push to make space accessibility more economical, as pointed out by Mr. Somanath.

The RLV-LEX-02 Experiment: ISRO has once again succeeded! The winged vehicle, Pushpak (RLV-TD), landed independently and accurately on the runway after being launched from a non-standard position.

The Pushpak launch vehicle is a testament to India's groundbreaking efforts to transform space exploration, and its triumphant landing signifies further progress in this field. The project, which has been under construction for more than ten years, made a notable advancement in April of the previous year. This was when Pushpak showcased its ability to land autonomously after being deployed from an Indian Air Force Chinook helicopter. This achievement has brought Pushpak nearer to its mission of obtaining orbital re-entry capabilities.

The Pushpak project, with a funding of roughly Rs 100 crore, not only demonstrates India's technological capabilities but also sets the foundation for upcoming missions. This includes the bold plan of setting up the Bhartiya Antariksha Station by 2035.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi's latest trip to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Somanath updated him on the advancements of the Pushpak vehicle. The development of the RLV spacecraft originally started in January 2012, after receiving approval from the National Review Committee. Following that, the first model, dubbed RLV-TD (Technology Demonstrator), was created.

Progressive supercomputer models, along with partnerships from organizations such as the National Aerospace Laboratory and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), have greatly contributed to the creation of heat-resistant materials. These materials are crucial for safeguarding spacecrafts during their reentry into the atmosphere. The first flight of the RLV, which took place in 2016, was a notable achievement in India's exploration of space.
