VIEW: Paraplegic man can play video games through 'telepathy' thanks to Elon Musk’s Neuralink BCI chip

A live video was streamed by Neuralink, featuring Noland Arbaugh, a paraplegic patient who is utilizing Neuralink. The video highlights his ability to play internet chess and the video game Civilization, only using his brain, facilitated by the brain-computer interface.

Neuralink, the innovative company founded by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, has revealed its first human trial participant for an advanced brain implant. The 29-year-old test subject, Noland Arbaugh, who has been wheelchair-bound for eight years due to a diving mishap, demonstrated his newly gained skills on a live broadcast on social media platform X. This marks a significant milestone for Neuralink.

In the broadcast, Arbaugh showcased his ability to play internet chess and the well-liked video game Civilization, relying only on the Neuralink device.

In a surge of victory, he proudly announced, "If you can observe the pointer navigating across the screen, that's entirely my doing. It's quite impressive, isn't it?"

Neuralink's project is focused on creating an advanced brain-computer link, which would allow paralyzed individuals to manage digital interfaces by interpreting brain signals.

This groundbreaking technology represents a major step forward in narrowing the divide between human understanding and machine engagement.

After receiving the green light from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the previous year, Neuralink began its first human trial. It recruited participants with paralysis to assess the effectiveness of its implant.

The path to this achievement has been largely hidden, with Neuralink sharing minimal information. Details about the trial have mostly emerged via occasional social media posts and a few company releases.

Even though neuroscientists and ethicists have criticized the project for not being transparent enough, Musk continues to have a positive outlook on its advancement.

"Musk reported on February 19 during a Spaces session on X that the advancements have been positive and the patient appears to be completely healed, without any known negative consequences. He added that the patient is capable of controlling a mouse on a screen solely through their thoughts."

In a recent audio discussion on X, he observed that the first participant has shown significant progress, effectively controlling a computer mouse purely with their mind.

However, reservations remain about the trial's approach and supervision. Neuralink has still not shared crucial information like the total participant count, trial sites, or distinct evaluation criteria.

Moreover, the lack of enrollment on ClinicalTrials.gov, a system required for transparency in human medical studies, brings up concerns about the trial's compliance with regulatory norms.

Neuralink consistently stretches the limits of neurotechnology, persistently maintaining focus on its pledge for openness, moral contemplations, and the possible consequences of its innovative progress for people suffering from paralysis.
