Ex-Activision Blizzard CEO, Bobby Kotick, intends to purchase TikTok, has approached Sam Altman with the idea

Bobby Kotick, who previously held the position of CEO at Activision Blizzard, is ready to take over TikTok from ByteDance if the Chinese firm decides to sell. This development comes amid a situation where US legislators are contemplating either prohibiting the application or compelling ByteDance to sell it.

Bobby Kotick, the ex-CEO of Activision Blizzard who resigned last year, appears to be considering purchasing TikTok. His interest is sparked by a recent US legislation that could either outlaw the app or force it to sell.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Kotick had a conversation about purchasing TikTok in a partnership with Sam Altman, the leader of OpenAI, and various others during a meal last week. He also had a discussion about this concept with Zhang Yiming, the chief executive of ByteDance, the company that has ownership of TikTok. The report suggests that if TikTok were to be sold, its price tag could potentially reach into the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Kotick has been at the helm of Activision for over three decades.

Kotick's apparent enthusiasm for TikTok emerges amid a chaotic period for the popular social network, which is facing a possible prohibition in the US, one of its most significant markets outside China. US legislators recently proposed the "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act" which would facilitate the banning or separation of TikTok from its parent company, ByteDance.

President Biden has expressed his willingness to endorse the bill if it gets approved. The proposed legislation, set for a House vote on Wednesday, necessitates that TikTok's parent firm, ByteDance from China, must sell the application to a US-based company or an ally within half a year if it intends to keep functioning in the nation.

If this is not done, TikTok could be taken off from app stores in the US.

In response to the rapidly progressing laws, TikTok has been encouraging its multitude of American users to stand behind it. The app issued alerts in the previous week, requesting users to get in touch with their lawmakers.

It is anticipated that the bill will be approved by the House, particularly since it was unanimously endorsed by the Energy and Commerce Committee the previous week. If the House gives the green light, the bill will then proceed to the Senate for additional review.

Legislators are apprehensive regarding TikTok's data confidentiality and its connections with China. The Wall Street Journal, on the other hand, implies that enlisting Sam Altman in a possible acquisition could pose problems. This is due to the likelihood of OpenAI utilizing TikTok to educate its AI models, which might not be the best scenario for its users.
