OpenAI-driven android is the 'most human-like robot to date', set to rival Tesla's Optimus

The humanoid robot, Figure 01, developed by Figure, has introduced new capabilities, courtesy of OpenAI's LLMs. As a result of these enhancements, Figure states that their Figure 01 android is currently the most human-like robot in existence.

The tech startup, Figure, has released a new video that features its humanoid robot, Figure 01, interacting with an engineer and performing household tasks such as tidying up dishes.

The showcase, succeeding Figure's collaboration news with OpenAI, emphasizes the robot's capability to participate in "speech-to-speech reasoning". This leaves the audience feeling uncertain about whether to be amazed or anxious.

The video shows Figure 01 pinpointing items on a table, which includes a red apple, and it responds to a human tester's food request by smoothly giving them the apple. When asked why it chose that, the robot provides an explanation for its decision, incorporating a pause similar to human speech, which adds a strange, almost eerie feeling.

Thanks to OpenAI, Figure 01 is now capable of engaging in comprehensive dialogues with individuals. OpenAI models equip it with advanced visual and linguistic capabilities. The quick and adept robot actions showcased in Figure's neural networks are efficient, even at a basic level. Although Figure has yet to release a product fit for market, the demonstration suggests a potentially unsettling future where engagement with AI-powered robots might make it hard to distinguish between help and discomfort, especially in home chores such as washing dishes.

Figure recently joined forces with ChatGPT creator, OpenAI, with a goal to arm its upcoming robots with enhanced language comprehension skills, thus promoting rapid learning. Earlier videos highlighted Figure 01's skills in handling a coffee maker, walking, and moving items around.

In partnership with OpenAI, Figure is working to create advanced AI models for humanoid robots that can understand and make decisions based on language inputs, as mentioned in a past press release. The recent demonstration indicates substantial progress towards this lofty objective.

In the meantime, Tesla, a rival company, is under investigation following a contentious video that supposedly showed its humanoid robot, Optimus, folding a shirt. This event highlights the challenges Tesla needs to overcome in the field of sophisticated humanoid robotics.

As Figure advances in developing humanoid robots with the help of OpenAI, the technology scene keeps changing, offering both prospects and hurdles for the future of robotics powered by AI.
