Erdogan’s First Visit to Biden Administration Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict: Implications and Expectations

During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the US on May 9, marking his first visit during the Biden administration. Reports from Turkish outlets have indicated that Erdogan plans to repeat his call for an end to Israeli aggression in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

For the first time during the end of Biden's presidency, Turkey's leader, Tayyip Erdogan, is set to visit the United States on May 9, according to a Turkish security representative who announced it on Friday.

Reuters has reported that the chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. The agenda for the meeting includes discussions on Erdogan's upcoming visit and other matters concerning both nations, as revealed by an official

Previously, numerous Turkish news sources reported that Erdogan was set to visit the US, having received an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face meeting between the two leaders was last July at a NATO Summit, but they have regularly communicated over the phone.

By chance, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's initial unsuccessful attempt to join NATO, which was blocked by Istanbul. However, after Turkey gave its approval, relations between the two countries had improved. Moreover, the meeting becomes more critical considering the recent Israel-Hamas war and the potential for the conflict to escalate throughout Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish press also indicated that Erdogan would repeat his call for Israel to cease hostilities in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has expressed criticism towards the US for its relentless backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. In February of this year, the Turkish leader accused the US of being the root cause of the so far unsuccessful peace negotiations in the region, which have been ongoing since the war erupted following an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7 of the previous year.

An anticipated major topic of discussion between the two leaders is likely to be the purchase of F-16s by Turkey and the refurbishment and modernization of the jets they have already obtained.
