Elon Musk announces to make a substantial part of xAI's Grok AI's source code publicly accessible this week, daring OpenAI to do the same with ChatGPT. The tech billionaire's announcement means that Grok will join a growing number of AI companies that have made their source code public for others to view and potentially duplicate.

In an unexpected turn of events that even his detractors didn't anticipate, Elon Musk has proclaimed that his AI venture, xAI, will make Grok AI, its chatbot that rivals ChatGPT, open source in the coming week. Essentially, this implies that he will make the source code, or a considerable part of it, accessible to all, potentially for use in their own chatbot applications.

This action occurs only a few weeks after Musk lodged a legal complaint against OpenAI. He claimed that the startup, which is supported by Microsoft, has deviated from its initial open-source values and is now concentrating solely on financial gain.

Grok was first launched by xAI the previous year, providing capabilities like real-time data access. This service is open to those who subscribe to X's premium plan at a cost of $16 per month.

Musk was among the initial supporters of OpenAI. He put his money into Sam Altman's venture nearly ten years ago, with the aspiration that OpenAI would persist in challenging Google's dominance.

Musk alleges that OpenAI has deviated from its pledge to openly distribute its technology to the public, instead becoming proprietary and primarily aiming to increase Microsoft's earnings.

The legal action has ignited discussions among tech enthusiasts and financiers regarding the worth of open-source artificial intelligence. Vinod Khosla, an initial backer of OpenAI, has spoken out against Musk's lawsuit, calling it a "huge diversion" from the primary objective of realizing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and its advantages.

Consequently, Marc Andreessen, the co-creator of Andreessen Horowitz, alleged that Khosla was opposing open-source AI research.

Andreessen contended that all major technological developments are greeted with overblown worries, and that open-source AI is crucial for advancement. Andreessen's company, a16z, has backed Mistral, an open-source chatbot.

The news that xAI plans to make Grok open-source soon, places it among a number of companies, such as Meta and the French startup Mistral, which have publicly shared their chatbot codes. This move also aligns Grok with multiple projects of Elon Musk that have been converted to open-source.

Elon Musk has consistently advocated for open-source projects. Numerous patents at Tesla have been converted to open-source. Moreover, X has also made efforts to make some of its algorithms open-source in the previous year.
