Tech Unemployment 2024: Dell dismisses 6000 staff, totaling 13000 layoffs in a year

Dell has unveiled a new wave of job cuts, sacking more than 6000 individuals. During this financial year, Dell's total layoffs have reached 13000, surpassing their original expectations.

Earlier this week, Dell Technologies declared another series of job cuts, leading to about 6,000 workers losing their jobs. This further contributes to the substantial decrease in the company's workforce, which lost 13,000 employees in the previous fiscal year, exceeding the original estimates.

Dell's recent job cuts are a component of a larger effort to reduce expenses. This includes strategies like restricting recruitment from outside the company and carrying out employee reshuffling and team reconfigurations. This move was prompted by a phase of slow demand for personal computers, which resulted in an 11 percent decrease in earnings in the last quarter of the preceding year.

Dell disclosed on February 2 that it currently employs 120,000 people worldwide, which is almost a 10 per cent drop from last year. The firm stressed its continuous work to cut expenses, and at the same time, enhance employee skills and abilities, and focus on acquiring, nurturing, and keeping skilled workers.

Poor performance in the sales of personal computers led Dell's top brass to declare job reductions at the beginning of 2023, focusing primarily on around 6,650 positions. Nevertheless, the total job cuts during the fiscal year 2024 were almost double that number.

Even with obstacles, Dell predicts an increase in net earnings for its Client Solutions Group this year. This projection, however, is set against a backdrop of expected higher input expenses and continued decreases in net profits from other business divisions because of alterations in its partnership with VMware.

Moreover, Dell is abolishing the work from home system and implementing a new plan for returning to the office. Employees will be classified as either 'hybrid' or 'remote'. The purpose of this is to prevent remote employees from being considered for any potential promotions or changes in positions within Dell.

Dell used to be recognized for its blend of in-office and remote working, but recent alterations in their policies have impacted their remote employees. A new study disclosed that those working from home and aiming for a promotion now need to adapt to a combination of remote and in-office work, and must be present in the office at least three days a week. This change has stirred up worries among employees about potential hindrances to their career advancement and a decrease in work flexibility.

On the other hand, a research piece referenced by Bloomberg underscores the profit expansion possibilities for businesses providing adaptable remote work choices. Businesses that have entirely flexible work-from-home policies saw their sales surge by 21 per cent from 2020 to 2022. This is compared to a mere 5 per cent income growth for businesses with a blend of remote and in-office work arrangements or entirely on-site work models during the same timeframe.
