Chandrayaan-3: The International Astronomical Union has formally sanctioned the name Shiv Shakti for the landing site.

The naming committee of the International Astronomical Union has formally sanctioned the name Statio Shiv Shakti for the landing site of ISRO's Chandrayaan-3, nearly 7 months after the name was suggested.

The confirmation has finally arrived. Roughly seven months since Prime Minister Modi proposed the name 'Shiv Shakti' for the Chandrayaan-3's moon landing site, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has formally sanctioned the name 'Statio Shiv Shakti.'

The IAU's Planetary System Nomenclature working group sanctioned the name for the notable landing location of Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander on March 19, 2024.

The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, which is a thorough record of planetary names approved by the IAU, officially declares that the IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature has given the green light to the name Statio Shiv Shakti for the landing spot of the Vikram lander from Chandrayaan-3.

The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature has announced that the name 'Statio Shiv Shakti' is inspired by Indian mythology, embodying the complementary aspects of masculinity (symbolized by "Shiva") and femininity (symbolized by "Shakti"). This name has been designated to the location where Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander is set to touchdown.

The IAU is frequently recognized as the worldwide body responsible for giving names to features on the surfaces of planets.

In this regard, the IAU must follow certain standards and protocols. For instance, Regulation 4 highlights the global aspect of naming objects in the solar system, with the IAU having the final say on the names. In contrast, Regulation 9 forbids using names that carry political, military, or religious weight, unless they pertain to political personalities who existed before the 19th century.

On August 26, when Prime Minister Modi revealed the title of the lunar landing site as Shiv Shakti, he explained the reasoning behind the choice of name. He stated that Shiva symbolizes a commitment to the well-being of mankind, while Shakti represents the power needed to achieve those commitments. He further added that the Shiv Shakti Point on the Moon also establishes a spiritual link between the Himalayas and Kanyakumari, according to PM Modi's words.

Besides calling the Chandrayaan-3 landing location 'Shiva Shakti', Prime Minister Modi in August had announced that the area where Chandrayaan-2 landed would be named 'Tiranga'. He conveyed that these names would act as a motivation for India's efforts and a reminder that obstacles are not equivalent to failure.

A decade and a half before the gentle landing of Chandrayaan-3, the moon impact probe (MIP) of India's Chandrayaan-1 mission made contact with the lunar surface on November 14, 2008. The chosen name for the impact location, 'Jawahar Point' or 'Jawahar Sthal', was relayed to the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

The U.S. Geological Survey's Astrogeology Science Centre, supported by the IAU and financially backed by NASA, oversees the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature. This crucial tool provides guidelines and approval processes for naming celestial bodies.
