Apple's decline in China, with iPhone deliveries in February dropping around a third compared to the same period last year

Apple's market performance in China is steadily decreasing. The shipment of iPhones in China has seen a significant drop of around one-third compared to the previous year. In January 2024, Apple recorded a 39 percent decrease compared to the same month the previous year.

Apple's financial stability in China remains uncertain. According to recent state data released on Tuesday, there has been a substantial drop in the number of iPhones shipped in China, falling about a third from the prior year.

This drop indicates a difficult environment for the US technology powerhouse in the world's second-biggest market, as it confronts intense rivalry from Chinese smartphone manufacturers.

To enhance ties with Chinese customers, vendors, and regional officials, Apple's CEO Tim Cook made a trip to Shanghai the previous week.

While on his trip, Cook was present at the inauguration of a fresh Apple Store in the Jing'an area of Shanghai, which is the biggest in Asia. He also had meetings with delegates from key Apple suppliers, including the chairman and CEO of BYD, Wang Chuanfu. Additionally, Cook took part in the China Development Forum held in Beijing, where he voiced his fondness for China and its citizens.

Even with a substantial number of Apple supporters in China, the company is facing administrative and competitive challenges. Claims have surfaced about alleged prohibitions on iPhone use by Chinese government entities and offices, though the government refutes these allegations.

Based on the official figures, international brands together delivered approximately 2.4 million smartphones in February, representing a 16.9 percent portion of the Chinese market. This indicates a considerable decline from the previous month, with Apple being the most prominent overseas competitor.

In January, Apple dispatched approximately 5.5 million units, indicating a 39 per cent drop compared to the previous year. To respond to the slump in consignments, Apple intends to reveal its much-anticipated artificial intelligence (AI) plan at its yearly Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It's anticipated that this approach will focus on significant software enhancements for its intelligent devices, comprising the iOS 18 update.

Furthermore, Apple is investigating potential collaborations with domestic AI companies for the Chinese market, with indications pointing towards Baidu as a possible partner. Yet, no deal has been established between Apple and Baidu, as per China Daily.

At the same time, Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Honor and Xiaomi are advancing in AI technology, displaying their products at exhibitions like MWC Barcelona. To reinforce its dedication to the Chinese market, Apple intends to amplify its research and development (R&D) activities in Shanghai and set up a fresh R&D laboratory in Shenzhen.

Even though significant attempts were made, iPhone's sales in China dropped almost 25% in the initial six weeks of 2024 compared to the equivalent period the previous year. This resulted in Apple ranking fourth, trailing Vivo, Huawei, and Honor. On the other hand, Huawei Technologies witnessed a substantial rise in sales, fueled by the robust demand for its top-tier 5G Mate 60 Pro smartphone.
