PM Modi expresses confidence in India leading the 4th Industrial Revolution, with significant contribution from AI: During a discussion with Bill Gates

Bill Gates, during his dialogue with PM Modi, noted the continuous enhancement and enrichment of India's Digital Public Infrastructure. PM Modi highlighted the significant potential of AI in India and the overall positive impact of technology on the quality of life of Indian people.

During a discussion with Bill Gates about India's technological advancement, Prime Minister Modi explained to Gates that India's growth as a nation was hindered during the first and second industrial revolutions due to British colonial rule. Nonetheless, PM Modi is confident that the country will compensate for this during the fourth industrial revolution.

In the past, during the initial two industrial revolutions, we were behind due to our colonial state. Currently, as we navigate through the fourth industrial revolution, digital technology is the centerpiece. I am optimistic that India will greatly benefit from this, said the Prime Minister. He also mentioned that India possesses the capability to be a frontrunner in this fourth revolution.

PM Modi detailed the ways in which India has utilized AI in diverse areas of governance and societal functions. He brought up instances from the 2023 G20 Summit and projects such as the NaMo App. He also highlighted his use of AI at the G20 summit for converting his speeches into various languages. He added that technologies like ChatGPT should be employed for continual self-improvement.

Gates praised the continuous enhancement and enrichment of India's Digital Public Infrastructure. He noted that many people are aware of India's identity (Aadhar) and digital payment systems (UPI). He also acknowledged the government's efforts in digitizing all payment programs, which has resulted in significant cost savings and increased accessibility. Furthermore, India has stepped into various other areas, such as providing easy access to advice and knowledge for farmers, managing health records, and tutoring children. Gates believes that we are now at a crossroads where the application of AI advancements to these systems will further increase their value.

PM Modi humorously commented to Bill Gates about the inherent nature of AI in India, even stating that newborn babies are essentially immersed in AI. He added a playful remark that in India, the word for mother is 'Aai', and he amusingly suggests that when a child is born, they utter 'Aai' as well as 'AI', indicating the level of advancement in children.

He further stated, "Using AI as some sort of magical solution could potentially result in serious unfairness. Relying on AI out of sheer laziness is not the right approach. Instead, I ought to compete with ChatGPT and endeavor to surpass AI…"

AI isn't always smooth sailing. Both leaders discussed the drawbacks and limitations of AI during their conversation. "Microsoft is marking its 25th anniversary in India, and during my speech to the team here in Hyderabad, I urged them to enhance the precision of our AI models. Our product, Copilot, makes recommendations but we're still required to make the final call."

Gates proceeded to question, "AI presents a massive prospect but it also has its difficulties. What is India's strategy to tackle this?" PM Modi acknowledged that AI is not without its problems. Issues like deepfakes and misinformation are significant global concerns. The PM also suggested steps to lessen its adverse effects. "If such a beneficial tool (AI) is handed over to someone without adequate training, it could be misused," he stated.

"The PM stated that it's imperative to begin by incorporating distinct marks on AI-produced content to avoid any confusion. He emphasized that in a democracy like India, anyone has the liberty to utilize deepfake. He stressed the importance of recognizing that deepfake content is created by AI. He also mentioned that we should ponder over some guidelines and restrictions."

Bill Gates recognized the difficulties linked to AI but conveyed a positive outlook regarding its capacity to make a difference. He stated, "We're still in the beginning stages of AI…It will accomplish tasks you perceive as difficult while failing at what you consider simple. While AI appears to be a great chance, it does bring along a few hurdles."

Information and confidentiality.

Gates and PM Modi both acknowledge that data and privacy are significant matters. Gates questioned how to strike a balance in the current AI-dominated world where data is crucial but also raises privacy issues.

"The Prime Minister emphasized the critical importance of data security. He noted that although India has a legal structure to address this, it is equally crucial for the public to be aware of it," the Prime Minister further stated.

He proceeded to illustrate how Digilocker has revolutionized things in India. "Now, universities are keeping certificates and degrees on cloud storage, a method that is not just cost-saving but also efficient. Furthermore, previously there was a strong emphasis on strict compliance needs. We pushed for streamlining, proposing that data should be uploaded to the cloud using shared IDs, allowing us direct access to the required information."

The Prime Minister also disclosed that while technology used to merely facilitate services in the past, it has now become a significant tool to enhance the quality of life for the people of India.
