Turkey’s President Erdogan’s First Visit to Biden Administration Amid Israel-Hamas War: Key Issues and Implications

During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the US on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's presidency. Reports from Turkish media suggest that Erdogan plans to repeat his call for Israel to halt its Gaza assaults and endorse a two-state resolution to the dispute.

For the first time during the end of Biden's term, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to travel to the United States on May 9, as announced by a Turkish security representative on Friday.

As per reports from Reuters, the chief of the Turkish MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. The agenda of the meeting will include discussions on Erdogan's proposed visit, along with other issues concerning both nations,

Previously, it was broadly covered by Turkish news agencies that Erdogan was set to visit the US on an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face encounter between the two leaders took place in July at a NATO Summit, despite maintaining regular phone correspondence.

Interestingly, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially opposed by Istanbul. However, after Turkey gave its approval, the relations thawed and returned to their usual state. Furthermore, the meeting takes on added importance in light of the recent war between Israel and Hamas, as well as the potential for this conflict to escalate further across the whole of Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish press had also suggested that Erdogan would repeat his call for Israel to cease hostilities in Gaza and implement a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan has consistently criticized the US for its staunch backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. In February of this year, the Turkish leader blamed the US for the ongoing failure of the peace process in the region, which has been in a state of war since Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7 the previous year.

Another significant topic likely to dominate the discussion between the two leaders could be the selling of F-16s to Turkey and the process of upgrading and modernising the jets already purchased.
