Turkey’s President Erdogan’s First Visit to Biden Administration Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict: Expectations and Implications

4 min read

During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, President Erdogan of Turkey is scheduled to be in the US on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's administration. Reports from Turkish media suggest that Erdogan plans to repeat his call for Israel to cease aggressions in Gaza and propose a two-state resolution to the conflict.

For the first time during the end of Biden's term, President Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey is set to visit the United States on May 9, according to a Turkish security official who announced this on Friday.

Reuters reports that the chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives on Friday. The agenda of the meeting includes discussion about Erdogan's forthcoming visit and other mutual concerns, stated the official.

Previously, it was broadly covered by Turkish news agencies that Erdogan was set to visit the US at the request of President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face interaction between these two leaders occurred last July at a NATO Summit, however, they have kept regular communication over the phone.

Coincidentally, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been tense due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially hindered by Istanbul. However, these cold relations warmed up again after Turkey gave the green light. Additionally, this gathering is particularly important considering the recent war between Israel and Hamas and the potential for an escalating conflict throughout the entirety of Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish media also indicated that Erdogan was expected to repeat his call for Israel to halt its assaults in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan has, nonetheless, criticized the US for its steadfast backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year, in February, the Turkish leader blamed the US for the ongoing failure of peace talks in the region, following the war that erupted when Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7 of the previous year.

Another significant topic anticipated to capture the interest of the two leaders could be the transaction involving F-16s to Turkey, as well as the enhancement and modernization process for the jets obtained so far.
