Turkey President Erdogan’s US Visit Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict: Key Talks on Bilateral Issues and West Asian Crisis

During the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, is set to make his maiden visit to the US under the Biden administration on May 9. Reports from Turkish news outlets suggest that Erdogan is expected to reemphasize his call for Israel to halt its assaults in Gaza, and push for the two-state resolution to the issue.

For the first time since President Biden took office, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the United States on May 9th, as announced by a Turkish security official last Friday.

Reuters reports that Ibrahim Kalin, the head of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday. They plan to talk about Erdogan's upcoming visit and other matters concerning both nations, as stated by an official.

Previously, it was heavily reported by Turkish news sources that Erdogan was set to visit the US due to an invitation from President Biden. The most recent face-to-face meeting between the two leaders had taken place this past July at a NATO Summit, although they have been regularly communicating via phone.

By the way, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially halted by Istanbul. However, the cold relations thawed after Turkey approved the matter. Furthermore, the meeting takes on greater importance considering the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, and the potential for the conflict to escalate throughout the whole of Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish media also suggested that Erdogan was set to repeat his call for Israel to cease hostilities in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan has expressed disapproval of the US for its unyielding backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. In February of this year, the President of Turkey blamed the US for the ongoing unsuccessful peace negotiations in the region. This conflict began when Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7 of the previous year.

A significant topic anticipated to dominate the discussion between the two leaders could be the sale of F-16s to Turkey, as well as the modernization and enhancement of jets that have been purchased until now.
