Chandrayaan-3: Shiv Shakti gets official nod as name for landing site from International Astronomical Union

The International Astronomical Union's Planetary System Nomenclature working group has formally sanctioned the name Statio Shiv Shakti for the landing spot of ISRO's Chandrayaan-3, nearly 7 months after the suggestion was made.

At last, it's confirmed. Roughly seven months since Prime Minister Modi proposed the name 'Shiv Shakti' for Chandrayaan-3's lunar landing spot, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has formally sanctioned the name 'Statio Shiv Shakti.'

The Planetary System Nomenclature's working group from the IAU gave their approval for the name of the notable landing location of Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander on March 19, 2024.

The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, which is a thorough record of planet names authorized by the IAU, confirms that the IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature has approved "Statio Shiv Shakti" as the official name for the landing site of the Vikram lander from Chandrayaan-3.

The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature's announcement states that the term 'Statio Shiv Shakti' is rooted in Indian mythology, signifying the balance of male (symbolized by "Shiva") and female (symbolized by "Shakti") energies. This title has been given to the location where Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander is set to touch down.

The IAU is frequently recognized as the worldwide entity responsible for designating names to features on the surface of planets.

In order to achieve this, the IAU must follow particular guidelines and standards. For instance, according to Rule 4, the process of naming elements of the solar system has an international scope, and the ultimate decision on the name lies with the IAU. Furthermore, Rule 9 bans the application of names that carry political, military, or religious importance, unless they are related to political personalities who existed before the 19th century.

On August 26, when Prime Minister Modi revealed the name of the lunar landing site as Shiv Shakti, he explained the thought process behind the selection of the name. He stated that Shiva represents a commitment towards the well-being of mankind and Shakti provides the power to realize those commitments. He also added that this lunar point named Shiva Shakti establishes a symbolic link from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari.

Apart from assigning the name 'Shiva Shakti' to the Chandrayaan-3 touchdown point, PM Modi announced in August that the location where Chandrayaan-2 landed would be dubbed 'Tiranga'. He communicated that these designations would act as motivational cues for India's efforts and a reminder that stumbling blocks do not equate to failure.

A decade and a half before the gentle landing of Chandrayaan-3, the moon impact probe (MIP) of India's Chandrayaan-1 mission made contact with the moon on November 14, 2008. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) was informed that the site of impact was named 'Jawahar Point' or 'Jawahar Sthal'.

The U.S. Geological Survey's Astrogeology Science Centre, in partnership with the IAU and financially supported by NASA, oversees the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature. This tool is essential for establishing and approving names for celestial bodies.
