Samsung secures patent for three-fold, rollable phone screens, new foldable models expected

Samsung aims to launch two distinct types of foldable phones, as suggested by their recent patents. Samsung was just granted the patent for a unique three-fold display, and a compact rollable phone screen.

The well-known South Korean technology powerhouse, Samsung, has recently reached a notable benchmark by obtaining patents for its innovative tri-fold and rollable display technologies from the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This accomplishment highlights Samsung's ongoing advancements in the field of flexible display technology.

Samsung's tri-fold display technology, which was presented at CES 2022, has received a patent from the USPTO. This is different from the typical foldable phones that fold like a book, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or the OnePlus Open. Samsung's tri-fold display proposes a unique method. The patented design includes a display module with at least one foldable area, enabling the screen to extend across three panels at the same time. This groundbreaking design provides users with a smooth and wide viewing experience, similar to the Flex S technology Samsung has shown before.

Aside from the three-part display, Samsung has also gained a patent for its retractable screen technology. The patent illustrates a gadget that includes a retractable screen that can be pulled back into the case when the gadget is shut and pulled out for usage when it's open. The casing is portrayed as being able to change shape in two situations — when it's closed and when it's open — this enables the easy roll out of the display screens by employing hinges.

These patents demonstrate Samsung's dedication to advancing display technology, but the company has not revealed any immediate intentions to incorporate these advancements into consumer products. It's likely that Samsung is concentrating on enhancing these technologies to tackle common issues related to performance and durability in foldable devices before launching them commercially.

Samsung's consistent dedication to developing flexible display technology highlights its leadership in the sector. As they continue to push the boundaries with these pioneering technologies, customers can look forward to potential future devices that offer improved adaptability and performance, transforming the consumer electronics market.
