A Kerala-based school presents India's inaugural robot teacher, fueled by Gen AI and an Intel SoC

A school situated in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has revealed the first robotic teacher in India, developed by Maker Labs and based on generative AI. Named Iris, this robot can provide lessons to students from kindergarten through 12th grade. At present, Iris has the ability to converse in English, Hindi, and Malayalam.

In a pioneering initiative that could transform India's education system, a school in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has launched the nation's first AI teacher robot. The robot, named Iris, was developed by Maker Labs using generative AI technology.

Maker Labs announced on Instagram that they have reached a significant breakthrough in education with the introduction of IRIS, India's pioneering AI teacher robot developed using generative AI technology. They shared their aspiration to revolutionize education by using AI to provide customized learning experiences. IRIS allows educators to present highly engaging and efficient lessons, uniquely adapted to each student's requirements and tastes in an unprecedented way.

A recording circulated on social media reveals the debut of a robot at KTCT Higher Secondary School in Kerala, where it is seen interacting with students in a classroom setting. Iris, the robot, was launched by Dr K Rajeev, who is the Director of the Space Physics Laboratory (SPL) at VSSC. The footage underscores the rapid adoption of the AI teacher, indicating its swift acceptance and bonding with the students at KTCT Higher Secondary School.

The AI educational robot, Iris, is not merely a passive participant in the classroom. It's an engaging study buddy, fueled by advanced robotics and generative AI capabilities. Iris boasts a specific Intel processor and coprocessor, ensuring seamless operation. Also, its intuitive Android App interface provides user control and engagement at their disposal, promising a personalized educational experience.

Iris was constructed under the umbrella of the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL), a venture initiated by NITI Aayog in 2021 to promote supplementary educational pursuits among students in schools.

Operating as an AI voice aide, Iris answers user questions, provides clarifications, and showcases educational material.

Moreover, Iris's hands, which each have 5 degrees of freedom, allow it to manipulate objects, perform demonstrations, and take part in practical learning activities.

Iris also features a four-wheel structure, enabling it to move around unimpeded in the area it's stationed, making it easier to interact with users and traverse spaces without difficulty.

Iris possesses the ability to instruct students from pre-school up to the 12th grade. At present, Iris communicates in English, Hindi, and Malayalam, but has plans to increase its language skills to more than 20 languages. Additionally, Iris has the ability to filter out unsuitable content related to drugs and violence, thus ensuring a secure and beneficial learning atmosphere.
