SEE: Kerala school unveils innovative robot instructor, driven by Gen AI and an Intel SoC

An educational institution in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has launched India's premier AI robotic instructor. Named Iris, the robot was developed by Maker Labs and operates on generative AI. Iris is able to teach a range of topics from preschool to 12th grade and presently interacts in English, Hindi, and Malayalam.

A pioneering initiative that could potentially transform the education system in India has been launched by a school in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, introducing the nation's first AI teacher robot. This robot, named Iris, was developed by Maker Labs using generative AI technology.

Maker Labs shared exciting news on Instagram, unveiling IRIS, India's pioneering AI teacher robot, rooted in generative AI technology. The company articulated its goal of revolutionizing the educational sector by harnessing AI to curate customized learning experiences. Iris has the potential to help educators provide engaging and effective tutoring, adapting to each student's unique needs and preferences in a way that was not possible before.

A video circulating on social media reveals a robot being introduced on stage at KTCT Higher Secondary School in Kerala, demonstrating its interactions with students in the classroom. Iris, the robot, was officially launched by Dr K Rajeev, the head of the Space Physics Laboratory (SPL) at VSSC. The video underscored how rapidly the AI-powered teacher has formed a bond with the students of KTCT Higher Secondary School.

The AI Teacher Robot Iris goes beyond being a simple passive presence in a learning environment; it serves as an engaging educational ally, backed by state-of-the-art Robotics and Generative AI technologies. It comes with a specialized Intel processor and a co-processor, ensuring seamless operation. Its intuitive Android App interface allows users to easily interact and control it, promising a customized learning experience.

Iris was developed under the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL), a 2021 initiative by NITI Aayog, aimed at enhancing the out-of-classroom activities of students in schools.

As an AI voice assistant, Iris addresses user questions, provides explanations, and offers educational material.

Moreover, Iris's hands, which have a flexibility of 5 degrees each, allow it to manipulate items, perform demonstrations, and engage in practical learning activities.

Iris also comes with a 4-wheel base that enables her to move smoothly in the environment she's placed in. This feature aids in seamless interaction with users and easy navigation through different spaces.

Iris has the ability to instruct students from kindergarten all the way up to 12th grade, and currently converses in three languages: English, Hindi, and Malayalam. There are also plans to increase her language capabilities to more than 20 different languages. Additionally, Iris comes with the ability to filter out content, specifically blocking any harmful content related to drugs or violence, thereby fostering a secure and suitable educational atmosphere.

The launch of Iris represents a substantial progression in the integration of technology and education, with the potential to enhance learning results and motivate learners in unique manners. As schools and universities adapt to the digital age, cutting-edge developments like Iris provide a preview of the future of education, where AI-powered instruments support conventional teaching techniques, cultivating a more engaging and efficient learning atmosphere.
