NVIDIA introduces the new Blackwell B200 AI superchip, asserting it to be 30 times more powerful than their existing flagship H100.

NVIDIA has rolled out a new series of AI GPUs named Blackwell. The premium B200 GPU superchip impressively delivers 20 petaflops of FP4 power, making it approximately 30 times quicker than the H100 and around 25 times less energy consuming.

NVIDIA, a leading company in AI hardware, has unexpectedly introduced an entirely new platform. The new platform, known as Blackwell, consists of a new breed of AI chips. These chips are said to offer considerably improved AI computing performance and superior energy efficiency.

At the company's yearly GTC event in San Jose, CEO Jensen Huang unveiled the new Blackwell series of AI chips. These chips are touted to offer unmatched speed and efficiency, signifying a major advancement in the functioning of artificial intelligence machines.

NVIDIA's Blackwell chips, named to honor the mathematician David Harold Blackwell, exhibit a significant performance improvement compared to the previous H100 chips. Huang reports that the Blackwell chips are seven to 30 times quicker than the H100, all while using considerably less power – specifically, around 25 times less. The standout products in this new line are the Blackwell B200 GPU and the GB200 "superchip."

Nvidia reports that their newest B200 GPU is impressively powerful, with 20 petaflops of FP4 power and 208 billion transistors. They also suggest that if you combine two of these GPUs with a Grace CPU in a GB200 setup, it can handle LLM inference workloads with up to 30 times the performance, possibly leading to a substantial increase in efficiency. Nvidia believes that this configuration could bring down costs and energy use by up to 25 times compared to the H100.

This advanced technology is set to transform the realm of AI applications, given their potential to consume significant resources.

Huang underscored the crucial influence of Blackwell GPUs in propelling what he referred to as the "new Industrial Revolution", underlining the transformative power of generative AI. With backing from prominent firms in diverse fields, NVIDIA is striving to unlock the complete potential of AI, transforming sectors and promoting innovation.

The exceptional strength of Blackwell chips can be seen in their unparalleled performance abilities. Reaching speeds as high as 20 petaflops, Blackwell surpasses the H100's performance dramatically, multiplying the computing power by four times.

This significant advancement is made possible by incorporating 208 billion transistors, a considerable growth from the H100's 80 billion. NVIDIA accomplished this by linking two large chip dies, allowing for ultra-fast data transfer at rates reaching 10 terabytes per second.

The importance of NVIDIA's role in the AI sector is highlighted by praises from leading figures in the industry. The necessity of NVIDIA's equipment is evident through the commendations from CEOs like Sam Altman of OpenAI, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, and Sundar Pichai of Alphabet for Blackwell's improved performance. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, agreed with this view, applauding Blackwell for driving innovation in AI computing.

NVIDIA has not yet revealed the cost of its Blackwell chips, but the appetite for its technology is unquenchable. Despite the high costs of NVIDIA's products, tech firms see acquiring these chips as a mark of prestige. Some startups have even gathered investment purely on the grounds that they can use NVIDIA’s H100 AI GPUs. With the waiting period for delivery extending to almost a year, getting hold of NVIDIA’s AI chips is of paramount importance for companies striving to stay competitive in the AI field.

As NVIDIA keeps advancing the limits of AI computing, the introduction of Blackwell signifies a fresh period of creativity and growth, driving the industry to unparalleled levels.
