Securing AI's future: Microsoft is constructing a $100 billion supercomputer named 'Stargate' solely for OpenAI

Microsoft and OpenAI have plans to establish numerous data centres throughout the US. Stargate, being their biggest data centre, will cover an area of 5 acres and will require approximately 5 gigawatts of electricity.

The Information reported on Friday that Microsoft is currently developing a plan to build an innovative supercomputer named "Stargate". The supercomputer, estimated to cost $100 billion, is designed to support the upcoming generation of AI systems from OpenAI.

Stargate seems to be the concluding stage of a joint project between Microsoft and OpenAI, with the goal of establishing numerous supercomputers throughout the US. Predictions indicate that Stargate could become one of the world's biggest and most advanced data centers, possibly extending over hundreds of acres. Moreover, it is estimated that the site would require around 5 gigawatts of electricity.

This challenging venture is considered essential for OpenAI's efforts to train and implement sophisticated AI models that exceed the abilities of ChatGPT-4. The launch is expected as soon as 2028.

The name "Stargate" is borrowed from the 1994 sci-fi movie that features an intergalactic teleportation gadget found in Egypt. The movie's focus on exploration and discovery is mirrored in the official Stargate trailer, which boldly proclaims, "The key to the past, the door to the future, the passage to discovery." This powerful message provides significant motivation for OpenAI and Microsoft's collaboration on an AI supercomputer project.

The launch of Stargate largely depends on OpenAI's capacity to present its next substantial AI improvement, allegedly GPT-5, expected to be released in early 2025 according to a report by The Information. Microsoft is enthusiastic about making sure that OpenAI keeps leading the way in creating AI models that grab worldwide interest.

Significantly, OpenAI's unsuccessful attempt to launch a fresh AI project, "Arrakis," in 2023 highlights worries about the company's path of innovation. These worries are primarily due to the restrictions associated with the logistical and financial challenges of establishing and operating a supercomputing infrastructure.

The creation of Stargate also clarifies speculations about Sam Altman's alleged founding of an expensive AI chip manufacturing unit. A key difficulty in constructing an AI supercomputer of this size is getting Nvidia GPUs to support the framework.

The ongoing scarcity of Nvidia chips amidst the AI industry's buzz has led to theories that a strong rival from Altman and Microsoft might potentially shake up the market and provide unparalleled benefits.

As Microsoft and OpenAI continue to progress with their bold supercomputer initiative, the growing excitement around Stargate's arrival highlights its capacity to revolutionize the field of artificial intelligence research and development.
