OpenAI's humanoid robot is hailed as the 'most human-like robot ever', set to compete with Tesla's Optimus
The humanoid robot, Figure 01, by Figure showcased its latest features, made possible by OpenAI's LLMs. With these enhancements, Figure asserts that their Figure 01 robot is currently the most human-like robot in existence.
The technology-based startup, Figure, has recently released a video demonstrating its humanoid robot, Figure 01, conversing with an engineer as it performs domestic tasks such as tidying up dishes.
The showcase, which comes after Figure's collaboration news with OpenAI, emphasizes the robot's capacity for "speech-to-speech reasoning." This leaves spectators in a state of uncertainty, torn between admiration and unease.
The footage shows Figure 01 pinpointing items on the table, such as a red apple, and smoothly gives the apple to the human examiner upon their request for food. When asked about its selection, the robot provides a justification for its decision, even incorporating a human-like hesitation in its dialogue, which adds to a somewhat eerie sensation.

Even though Figure doesn't have a product ready for the market yet, their demonstration suggests a potentially unsettling future where our engagement with AI-powered robots could make us feel uncomfortable, especially when it comes to domestic chores such as washing dishes.
Figure's latest collaboration with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is intended to provide their upcoming robots with superior language comprehension abilities, thereby promoting rapid learning. Earlier videos have demonstrated Figure 01's skills in managing a coffee machine, moving around, and handling items.
Figure, in partnership with OpenAI, is striving to create advanced AI models for humanoid robots, which would allow them to understand and make conclusions from language inputs, as mentioned in an earlier press statement. Recent demonstrations indicate considerable progress towards this challenging objective.
In the meantime, Tesla, a rival company, is under examination following a contentious video that purportedly shows its humanoid robot, Optimus, folding a shirt. This event highlights the challenges Tesla is facing in its quest to keep up in the field of sophisticated humanoid robotics.
