Microsoft recruits Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, to head new consumer AI division

Microsoft has an ambitious plan to broaden its consumer AI offerings and has designated DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to spearhead the department.

Microsoft has named Mustafa Suleyman, one of the founders of DeepMind, as the head of its consumer AI department in a significant decision that could accelerate the creation of AI products.

For the first time, the technology powerhouse has appointed a specific leader to manage this crucial sector. Suleyman, who was previously in a leadership position at competitor Inflection AI, has now moved to Microsoft.

Suleyman, in his role as the CEO and executive vice president of the recently established Microsoft AI section, will lead the development of the Copilot assistant. His goal is to establish Microsoft as a strong rival to the Big Five in Silicon Valley, especially Google, in the field of artificial intelligence.

Suleyman is joined in this endeavor by Karén Simonyan, another individual who helped establish Inflection AI, and who now takes on the position of head scientist in the department. Both Suleyman and Simonyan will be answerable directly to Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, emphasising the crucial role they play in advancing Microsoft's AI projects.

Microsoft's launch of the Copilot assistant has been called "chaotic," facing issues including narrow market growth against Google's search supremacy and worries about the security of AI tools like Copilot. Regardless of these obstacles, Microsoft continues to stand by its collaboration with OpenAI, which supplies the basic AI structures for Copilot.

Suleyman's move to Microsoft involves the merging of several essential members from Inflection AI into the company's AI department, highlighting Microsoft's determination to strengthen its team of AI engineers and researchers. Nadella underscored the significance of this alliance, confirming Microsoft's commitment to furthering AI innovation in partnership with OpenAI.

This news aligns with Microsoft's imminent Surface event titled "New Era of Work," where the tech giant is set to display progress in AI incorporation throughout its offerings, including Copilot, Windows, and Surface. As Microsoft consistently emphasizes AI growth, Suleyman's guidance is set to be crucial in influencing the evolution of consumer AI tech within the organization.
