Lawsuit alleges Facebook allowed Netflix access to users' private messages, planned to launch its own streaming platform

According to court files in an active lawsuit, Meta, which has been notoriously unreliable in protecting its consumer's data and privacy, might be in deep trouble. These documents suggest that Meta could have revealed its users' confidential information and private messages to Netflix.

A lawsuit has disclosed that Facebook, overseen by Mark Zuckerberg's Meta, had arguably the largest violation of public faith. They permitted Netflix to view user's private messages to aid in improving their content programming.

Court records recently made public in a continuing antitrust lawsuit against Meta, previously recognized as Facebook, have unveiled the complex ties between the social media powerhouse and streaming titan Netflix.

The papers hint that Meta's choice to stop producing unique shows on its platform, including Jada Pinkett Smith's Red Table Talk, could have been swayed by its collaboration with Netflix, a key ad client, as indicated by Gizmodo and Ars Technica.

Meta's broadcasting venture, once seen as a possible competitor to heavyweights like YouTube and Netflix, now seems to be inactive. In April of the previous year, Meta declared that it would no longer support original series on Facebook Watch, essentially putting an end to its aspirations for video streaming. This decision occurred during a period of cost reduction at Meta, which also involved job cuts.

The latest filings in the antitrust case against Meta hint at a more profound reason for the downfall of its streaming project. The paperwork implies that Meta scaled back its streaming ambitions to placify Netflix, a major advertiser on its platform. A letter submitted in the lawsuit urges Netflix's founder and ex-CEO, Reed Hastings, to supply documents pertinent to the lawsuit, suggesting a tight partnership between both companies.

The legal action, initially brought forward by Meta users, alleges that the technology behemoth is engaging in unfair competition that harms both social media rivals and customers. The primary allegation pointed towards hidden deals between Meta and Netflix. However, the recent disclosure of confidential documents has provided more insights into the depth of their partnership.

The records suggest that Netflix's significant ad spending on Facebook has helped build a robust partnership, with Hastings reportedly being instrumental in discussions aimed at suppressing competition in the online video streaming market.

People are wondering why Meta would let Netflix sway a major business choice. The paperwork hints at a profitable collaboration between both entities, with allegations that Meta gave Netflix permission to access users' confidential messages — a charge that Meta has not openly responded to.

Meta's aspiration to excel in streaming, represented through Facebook Watch, never managed to reach the heights of platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Despite early attempts at creating unique content and obtaining the rights to broadcast sports events like MLB matches, Facebook Watch struggled to establish a foothold in the competitive streaming market.

The disclosed legal papers show internal conversations at Meta about significant funding in unique content, including planned programming and brief episodes. Allegedly, these talks happened when Hastings was a part of Meta's director panel, sparking worries about possible conflicts of interest and potential conspiracy.

A significant event took place at the 2017 Recode conference when Hastings understated the rivalry between Netflix and Facebook, only to later voice his remorse in an email to Meta's top brass. The litigants claim that Sheryl Sandberg, who was Meta's COO at the time, and Hastings meticulously planned conversations to divert focus from their firms' head-to-head battle in the video streaming industry.

As the antitrust case progresses, insights from the disclosed legal papers provide a peek into the intricate relationships between technology behemoths and streaming services, emphasizing the possible impact of business partnerships on market rivalry and customer options.
