Russia is evading penalties to take over Ukraine's Starlink network for directing drone assaults

Numerous media sources and military personnel indicate that the Russians might have breached and taken control of Starlink. These reports further imply that the Russian forces are using Starlink for launching attacks on Ukrainian troops.

Ukrainian frontline soldiers have reported problems with the crucial Starlink internet service, owned by Elon Musk, which is used to manage Kyiv's fleet of assault drones. The suspected cause? They think that Russian forces are manipulating and using their Starlink system, despite US sanctions.

According to a CNN report, interviews with soldiers from various front lines revealed that they have observed a significant decrease in connection speeds in recent months. They have also experienced numerous other connectivity issues.

The grievances have corresponded with an increase in Ukrainian observations of Russian utilization of the satellite internet service, overseen by Musk's SpaceX. Moreover, there have been posts on social media from Russian entities asserting they've successfully bypassed restrictions on the usage of these gadgets by buying them via intermediary nations.

The specific reason for the declining service in Ukraine is still not known. Starlink, SpaceX, and Elon Musk all chose not to provide any commentary on the issue, according to a CNN report.

Military personnel and experts have proposed that the density of Starlink terminals in disputed regions may have increased recently, which might have an effect on the speed of internet connections.

Following the 2022 attack, Ukraine's military has greatly benefited from Starlink internet service. It has allowed for live transmission of drone footage among different units and facilitated communication in regions where regular mobile service has been interrupted due to warfare.

Service providers in the Zaporizhzhia region have been experiencing difficulties recently. Misha, a telecoms professional, mentioned recurrent issues like regular interruptions and slowing speeds, which have been problematic for their work. Anton, a drone controller from the 65th Mechanised Brigade, also experienced a notable drop in speed since the start of the year, blaming it on the growing interest in Starlink terminals among local units.

Several Ukrainian groups along the battle lines have confirmed these claims of speed issues with Starlink, and have also observed a rise in Russian usage. Nevertheless, they have decided to keep their identities hidden due to the delicate nature of the matter.

Steps taken to tackle the usage of Starlink by Russia in seized territories have prompted Ukraine to suggest fresh legal terms for satellite communications. The goal is to establish a list of approved devices that Kyiv can use. Private discussions with SpaceX and American authorities are said to be sensitive, with worries about guaranteeing service access for Ukrainian troops and stopping Russia from misusing the service.

Elon Musk had previously stated that Starlink wouldn't operate in Russia, however, recent posts on social media indicate differently. Russian crowdfunding groups are now openly talking about buying and setting up Starlink stations in Ukrainian areas currently under Russian control.

The US Congressional Oversight Committee's Democrats have urgently sought a briefing from Starlink in light of these events. They're concerned about possible breaches of US sanctions due to the Russians' usage of the devices.

As circumstances persistently change, interested parties stay alert, aiming to lessen the inappropriate use of technology in the continuing strife between Ukraine and Russia.
